"The migration plan has been reschedule for tomorrow the 29th at 10am PDT."

if you want donators worldwide you could at least use a UTC timestamp.

or maybe, just for fun you could use ROK or SWT or WAT, that way we can all have a puzzle.

and yes, as long as boinc/berkeley is wasting most of my time i will complain about even the smallest things.

and for everyone who is going to say i can stop donating time. indeed i can, if that was my choice there would be no reason to complain.

First someone complains that there's no time zone posted on the news items, now there is but someone else has to complain that it's not UTC ...

PDT is UTC -7 hours .. do the math.

For my feeling you are wasting your time by yourself if you make a simple, valid request to a complaint.

The SETI@home project is using UTC since a long time. They normaly give the time in UTC with a link to a SETI@home website explaining UTC and giving examples for the translation to local time. This is a normal behavior for a international project.

I can't find this webpage at the moment on the old website. It is (as other pages) still not moved to the new website. Maybe the one who wrote the news had the same problem and decide that it more importantly was to place the news then to search the page. There are many of this 'small' things to do. And they will be done in the future. But as you can see, they are working on weekend too. As every weekend in the last month.

It is typical for this boards at the moment, that many posts are only written to complain, without any chance to help other users or to force the progress of the SETI@home project. Why writing the positive improvement suggestions in the same way?

I was not happy with the usage of the PDT time too and agree with you that the project should go back to UTC usage as quick as possible, but getting current status information and a stable running system is more importend for me at the moment. And I know when they work on smaller issues, they must take the time from the major threads.

From time to time it is usefully to work on smaller things, so it is worth to post such issues here. But don't worry if we must ask more then one time or wait some weeks until someone find time for it. I am sure (I know) they are all working as much as they can.

Greetings from Bremen/Germany

PS. And for my feeling it is more a post for the wish list, then for the science board.

People in Germany don't have to do the math for UTC, just look at their clocks

Ah... The voice of reason from a fellow ham. I was about to post
about the same comment. It is certainly not a big problem but GMT
or UTC would be better. PDT doesn't mean much for any non north
american. Many will still have to find out in what time zone they
are but at least universal coordinated time is...UNIVERSAL.

I would had that those who says "if it's that important..." well
it is actually very important. Every plane, ship, radio operator,
bank exchange, etc, uses UTC. I have sailed about 100 000 nautical
miles in the past 10 years and I must have changed time zone Thousands
of times. All weather reports, safety reports, weather radar images,
distress call, etc. uses UTC. Anything witch is "professional"
and international uses UTC. PDT is just like "land miles" it doesn't
mean anything.

Just for information, and because people ask me very often on the ship
what is the difference between "land mile" and nautical mile. Just like
a cercle, The earth is divided by 360° at the equator. Strait lines
from pole to pole crosses these points. It is called Longitute. Each of
these 360 longitudenal degree is composed of 60 divisions we call minutes.
Each minutes = 1 Nautical miles. (1 NM = 1.852 KM)

Another question that comes often. What is a knots ? 1 knots is 1 Nautical
mile per hour. A ship sailing at 15 Knots will do 15 Nautical miles per hour
or 28 KMH.

Sorry for long post and being totally out of subject. I tought it might
be interresting for those who where wondering. As for "land" mile I really
don't know ?

Friendly
Marc

PDT is GMT-7:00

There is a map at http://www.time.gov -- click on the west coast.

10:00am PDT is about 45 minutes from now.

Thanks Ned. My problem is I often speak for the mass...
I know what PDT is. I am currently on the east coast so
3 hours ahead of PDT.

I have just noticed that the post time is UTC...

Well I'm a fellow ham too ya know. I dont pay any attn to the time on boincs news since they havent yet met a scheduled time. But since I'm on the west coast I like the PDT. Maybe since this is all voluntary they figure that if you really want to know you'd convert the time yourself. Or maybe they just use the clock on thier own wall and go from there. And if you really want to confuse us just use those metric measurements. :)

Yes I guess they use the clock on the wall. Like I said it's not a big problem
we (north american) no what PDT means but one in congo would have to
find first what PDT means. As oppose to GMT or UTC where much more people
knows what it is. They would still have to do the math to find their time difference
with UTC but they wouldn't have to guess what it is.

Imagine SETI project is located in Russia and they post the following news

The server will be down at 2200 PETST

You would say what the F... is PETST you will have to search the net to find
out what is PETST and what time it is over there, etc.

I am sure you would much prefer read "The server will be down at 2200 UTC"

For me it's just about being logical when dealing with international communication
Although it's easy to find it out today with all the web site giving time zones.

Friendly 73
Marc
