OS X optimized clients (10.3.9 and newer):
v6-g4 - optimized for all G4s
v6-g5 - optimized for all G5s

  • data alignment for fast folding algorithm
  • better tail element handling for fast folding algorithm
  • lazy initialization for Gaussian reporting

I'm not clear on the exact extent of the speedup over v5, but I'm pretty sure there is one. ;)

The Linux SSE2-optimized client downloads have been updated -

there were some incompatibilities with Linux-2.4 (previous builds were done on 2.6). The new binaries work on 2.4 and 2.6.

This is purely a compatibility update, performance is the same.

Hi everyone,

with the help of a lot of people who dedicated their time to testing, provided feedback and donated for the compiler/library licenses, here is what you've been waiting for:

Windows optimized clients (static executables, 32/64-bit compatible)

There are various different optimized clients. Please use a program like CPU-Z to find out exactly what your system supports.

Choose the first, in order, your system supports among the two lists (AMD/Intel or Intel only).

Intel-only clients (do not run these on AMD systems!)

Pentium M SSE2-optimized client
Only use this client on Pentium M systems like Dothan, Banias or Core Solo/Duo.

Pentium 4 SSE3-optimized client

Pentium 4 SSE2-optimized client

AMD and Intel-compatible clients

SSE2-optimized client

SSE-optimized client

MMX-optimized client

You can find statistics and information about these clients on the Result comparison table. Host information like CPU type, RAM, Cache size etc. is included. Please take a look before you download, you may find that for your specific CPU, a different client is quickest.

Please read Instructions.txt for Installation instructions.

These clients include the checkpoint() fix mentioned here.

Also, please post your results!

Regards,
Simon.

New versions of the Windows optimized science applications are available!

Two things are new in R-1.3:
- The apps now output the true CPU speed in MHz.
- There is an automatic test, benchmark and install package available (the automatic installer has not been tested extensively yet, but *should* work).

To explain - all versions are still offered on their own, but I've made a small VB program that runs all apps and figures out which is fastest using a modified (0.4x) WU. It's modified so it takes only minutes instead of hours per app.

You can use the download links in the previous post to grab them - the links will always stay the same (but still download the newest version available).

This release does not offer added performance.

Regards,
Simon.

OS X optimized clients (OS X 10.3.9 and newer)
i386-v6.1 - optimized for all Intel Core Duo processors
i386-v6.1-nographics - optimized for all Intel Core Duo processors

  • Intel Mac support (SSE3 support required)
  • improved housekeeping for pulse-finding algorithm

source code

Because there are now optimized clients for both Intel- and PPC-based Macs, version numbers will now be prefixed with "i386-" or "ppc-" to distinguish between builds for the different architectures.

New ICC/IPP optimized Linux apps have been released.

Available versions:

MMX
SSE
SSE2
SSE2-P4 (Caution: will not run on AMD systems!)
SSE2-PM (Caution: will not run on AMD systems!)

These apps have been tested and produce valid results on the platforms it was run on. Still, as always, your mileage may vary.

Regards,
Simon.

P.S.: Got Dr. Anderson to add my site to the 3rd party download page. Now only Alex Kan's site is missing :o)

OS X optimized clients (Mac OS X 10.3.9 and newer)
ppc-v7.1-g4-nographics - optimized for all G4s (compiled without graphics)
ppc-v7.1-g5-nographics - optimized for all G5s (compiled without graphics)

  • cache blocking in FFT analysis loop
  • vectorized spike-finding
  • more efficient use of PoT transpose
  • miscellaneous function tweaks

Intel compiles will come later, once I figure out how to backport some of these changes. From an optimization standpoint, v7.1 is a work in progress, so expect a v7.2 revision on both architectures.

A new ICC/IPP optimized Windows app for Intel Core 2 based systems has been released.

Windows Intel Core 2 SSSE3 optimized app (32 bit) (Caution: it will definitely only run on Core 2 systems!)

This app has been tested on Conroe and Woodcrest systems and produces valid results on the systems it was run on. Still, as always, your mileage may vary.

On my Woodcrest Xeon system, it has yielded a speedup of between 5 and 15% over the released 1.3 SSE3 app. It gets this speedup based on prefetch and SIMD assembly code developed by Michael Harrer.

Regards,
Simon.

Hi folks,

Code Revision 2.0 'Ni! of the KWSN SETI@Home optimized apps has been released.

This new revision supersedes the previously released Rev. 1.3 apps for all systems except those with Core 2-based CPUs. For these, please keep on using the app from the previous post for a little while longer.

'Ni!' also adds new features to the SETI@Home 5.15 codebase.

  • Adaptive Optimization - the function that runs quickest gets chosen
  • Better CPU name, speed and capability detection/output
  • Many source-level optimizations and partial rewrites (almost totally new pulse folding)
  • Easier "pluggability" of optimized code/functions with function benchmark (-bench)

The people responsible for these new features are, in no particular order, Ben Herndon, Josef W. Segur and Alex Kan. A great big "thank you", guys!

Also, the people in the pre-release test community have to be thanked for their willingness to donate days of CPU work at a time for testing purposes.

Can't forget everyone who posted their CPU details when we called for your help. Thanks! The accumulated data has made it into the new executables.

Pentium 4 SSE2-optimized app

AMD and Intel-compatible apps
SSE2-generic optimized app
SSE-optimized app
MMX-optimized app

As always, use these apps at your own risk. A pre-edited app_info.xml has been included with all files. Please unpack the files to a temporary location using 7-Zip (get it from http://www.7-zip.org), then read Instructions.txt in the folder it creates.

Happy crunching!

Simon

Hi folks,

an updated version of the KWSN Test & Benchmark Tool has been released.

KWSN Test & Benchmark Tool with Auto-Installer (1.75 MB compressed - 49.2 MB uncompressed - 7z rocks). You will need MS .NET 1.1 or newer to use this app.

Double-click "KWSN - CPU Test & Benchmark Tool V2.exe" and unpack its contents. Then run the file with the same name inside the directory it creates.

This version now contains all released Rev 2.0 apps as well as the 1.41 Core 2 one. It also has a slider to select between shorter run time with less accurate results or longer runtime with more accurate ones.

By default, "medium" is selected. On an Athlon64 3500+, "short" took about 4 minutes, "medium" took about 10 minutes and "long" took about 25 minutes.

On hosts that are slower than 1 GHz, "long" is not recommended - even "medium" may take a while. Hint: if the run results are very close, you may want to up it a notch towards accuracy to help you decide. The few extra minutes you spend here will give you days or more in the long run.

Note: these apps do not contain graphics. A versions with apps containing graphics will be released shortly.

Regards,
Simon.

Just missed the edit window on the previous post...

Here's the updated KWSN Test & Benchmark tool containing apps with graphics.

KWSN Test & Benchmark Tool with Auto-Installer with graphics (1.82 MB compressed - 43.3 MB uncompressed). You will need MS .NET 1.1 or newer to use this app.

Please follow the instructions in the previous post and from the app itself.

Here's a link to the specific Rev-2.0 apps with graphics.

Happy crunching!

i386-v7.2-coreduo-nographics - optimized for Intel Core Duo-based Macs
i386-v7.2-core2-nographics - optimized for Intel Core 2 Duo or Xeon-based Macs

  • feature parity with v7.1 for PowerPC-based Macs
  • pulse-finding tweaks inspired by Josef Segur's modifications for Windows Rev. 2.0 optimized apps
  • minor assembly tweaks
  • linked against IPP 5.2 beta

From my limited measurements, this client should be significantly (up to 50% in some cases) faster than its predecessor at short WUs, and 10+% faster at full-length WUs.
