I have been running "Seti" for several years without time limits, Now I get messages that say the 'time limit' has elapsed. I do not run my combuter all the time and i take exception to the idea that I have to have an individual work unit in to you people by an arbitary time limit. I do submit them when I have them finished but I suposedly "get no credit". Why? Why do you impose the rediculous idea of a time limit? If you want people to continue participating in your program. you wil do away with the "time limit"! Ralph |

Ummm, we are just volunteers here answering questions. So I will try and help you understand why there are time limits and then give you the website of the bosses so you can actually email someone that might be able to do something about your "issue". The reason for time limits is that this is a Science project, meaning if you don't return your work within a reasonable amount of time, Seti is 14 days, then the computer must hold your unit open waiting for you to return your work. There are almost 5000,000 users, can you just imagine the size of the database required to do that for everyone that doesn't return a unit within 14 days. The old Seti, Classic, didn't care whether the result you returned was Scientifically valid or not, you got credit for crunching anyway. The new Boinc DOES care. Sooo it is necessary to hold a unit open until a quorum of at least 3 results are returned, at which point credit is granted and the 4th person that got that same unit gets that amount of credit. That unit is then moved to another database for storage. Here is the website with all the muckity mucks email addresses on it: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/contact.php |

I can't tell what kind of system you have since you have hidden your account. Most people have no trouble returning work on time. The new enhanced client take longer to crunch the average WU, but then the due dates have been adjusted accordingly. This now varies depending on how much crunching is estimated to be needed. Anywere from 4 to 55 days. I don't recall the formulae that is used to decide the due date, but even a P2, crunching part time, should make the deadlines. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

I'd be willing to assume that the same machine that did Classic is being used for SETI/BOINC. And taking into consideration that it took over 100 hours per Classic WU it really might not be a good machine to use only part time for SETI/BOINC. It might be OK as a 24/7 machine though. Just a thought as he has his stuff hidden. |

It's interesting, the BOINC version of SETI has been running nearly 3 years, and this is the first and only person that I have seen to complain about time limits. The time limits have been on this version since the beginning. My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |
