Message 370082 - Posted: 17 Jul 2006, 12:48:01 UTC - in response to Message 362711.

The binaries run on IRIX 6.5.21 and above (current freely available IRIX is 6.5.22)
The binaries have been compiled to run on MIPS IV hardware (i.e. MIPS 5000 and above) - this means SGI O2, Octane, Fuel, Tezro, Origin series, Onyx 2, 3, 4.
There will be a release for R3000/R4000 series of CPUs done by the administrator of the Nekochan site.

The setiathome enhanced binary was linked against FFTW lib (single precision).

Nik.

Great !
Thank you very much, Nik.

The IRIX versions of BOINC client (5.4.9) and the SETI@Home Enhanced (5.12) are located at:
http://www.nekochan.net/nekoware/current/neko_boinc_client-5.4.9.tardist
http://www.nekochan.net/nekoware/current/neko_setiathome_enhanced-5.12.tardist

I have posted these locations to the maintainer of the web page listing the 3rd party software ports.

Regards,

Nik.

Some people did not know of the existance and state of the different ports for other, not offical supported ports of SETI Enhanced for other platforms.

Here is a list of the available ports :

http://www.lb.shuttle.de/apastron/boincDown.shtml :
- Solaris x86 on AMD64 (Opteron)
- Linux on AMD64 (Opteron)
- Linux on Itanium (IA64)
- Linux on PPC and Power CPUs
- HPUX 10.20/11.0/11i (V1 and V2.) on PARISC
- HPUX 11i (V.1 and V.2) on IA64 (Itanium)
- FreeBSD i386
- NetBSD i386
- OpenBSD i386

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/ports.cgi?query=boinc-setiathome&stype=all
- FreeBSD i386

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/seti-warp/message/1467
- OS/2 i386

The ports for AIX, Irix, Linux on SPARC, Solaris x86 for i386 and TRU64 are in work.

Not to sound stupid, although I probably will... solarix x86 for i386: is that for both intel/AMD 32 bit processors, as opposed to AMD64 which is only for AMD and 64 bit processors?

I've been at this website and downloaded some of the clients onto my Solaris x86 AMD 32 bit processor and have been able to connect and even attach, but not get any work. I have searched *everywhere* seriously, and not found any detailed install instructions that did not involve SPARC processors. I've even tried the linux boinc app (that's how I attached in the first place), but can't run the manager, etc...

Anyway, if I am right, above, then that would explain why its not working on my system. Any advise *at all* would be helpful. Hell, even a flame or stupid remark would be welcome. Just let me know if I'm on the right track by thinking I've done everything wrong so far. Thanx.

I am not shure, if the binaries will run on the 32 bit AMD and Intel CPUs. - But, I recommend you to write Stefan Urbat a mail. Stefan said, that he also would to build a binary for the i386, too.

I've alreday checked out these wiki's, I just didn't realize that Linux was the way to follow on Solaris. I had just experimented with it a little bit because I know Unix and Linux are similar, but not expecting real results. Thanks for the info.

I'll post my exact errors in a bit, I'm going to try it again. Thanks again for your response.

As for Stefan, I'll write him an e-mail as well, I would hate to think I'm just spinning my wheels using 64 bit apps on my 32 bit processor. I'll advise of response.

For your information, the FreeBSD ports collection now contains a version of the SAH Enhanced client which builds from source code, using the 2006-05-12 (5.13) tarball as astro/boinc-setiathome-enhanced.
Tested to be highly accurate on i386 (a Pentium 4M, with MMX and SSE2), feedback regarding other CPU architectures is welcome (my email address is in the port Makefile).

It is a problem with the source. Which boinc client do you have from the ports ?
Please contact the port maintainer, and report this error messages.

Btw. on Stefan Urbats site are binaries for FreeBSD i386 avaialable. I have made FreeBSD Alpha Binaries, which will be soon there available, too - or contact me per email for mailing the Alpha binaries.

Looks like you need to upgrade your net/boinc-client port. The header of the missing function is defined in boinc_api.h. This file is placed in /usr/local/include/BOINC when you install the net/boinc-client port.

You are right! Thank You~~~
After I reinstall boinc-client, everything is ok now.

Okay, so It's been a while, but my Solaris box has been down (I needed to use the RAM elsewhere). I got a new 512 Ram chip for the box last week, and I started fiddling with it again on Friday evening.

I did some more research and found some interesting information here: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=33837 (very recent, in fact).

So long story short, I reinstalled Solaris 10 on my 32 bit 1.2 Ghz machine, totally updated it, and then went to Stephan's site to download the boinc manager and client.

What I had done in the past was download the linux manager, especially after the above posts that mentioned Linux being so close this Unix version, and try to run it that way, of course, library errors ensued and I never could connect, although with some fiddling and a random application of Stephan's files *did* allow me to connect, just not download WUs.

The last item on the solaris section of Stephan's page seems to deal with PIIs and K8s, and not 64 bits, so I figured those would be my best bet to figure this out. I downloaded and unpacked the files and they created a boinc directory. Please keep in mind that I played with a variety of files and moved them around, anyway, I ended up with the setiathome.berkeley.edu directory in projects, and as per the linked post above. I made sure it read Setiathome_enhanced as the project name. I still couldn't connect, but now I was getting segmentation errors.

I'm doing all of this through the terminal, because I don't know how to get the gui to run, so I try to launch with the help option. This shows me a number of options including allowing the gui rpc, and changing the boinc data path.

Sure enough, next to boinc dir, on launch, I get "/" with nothing else. so on a whim, I try launching the boinc client -dir /BOINC (I learned that Solaris is case sensitive when looking for directories) -allow_remote_gui_rpc.

It ran the cpu benchmarks again and then downloaded a WU.

Woo Hoo is right!

Now if I can just get beta to work:

I've tried connecting to a variety of websites, including those that I know are incorrect (when you do this in windows, it sometimes advises you what website you *should* connect to... No joy.

Next tasks that any help on would be very much appreciated:

1) connect to seti-beta.
2) get boing manager gui interface to run so I can see progress (is this not supposed towork) should I consider a third party app that gives me info on work units? As it stands I can't easily tell any information, except how many WUs have been downloaded, or uploaded, I guess when they're done.
3) How to name my Solaris host (but this is a solaris issue not a boinc issue, and I'll figure that out myself)

Thanks for all your time, help and consideration in reading this!

You could not easly install and use linux binary on a solaris system, even you have installed the lxrun system.

The 64 bit binaries will not work on CPUs with 32 bit. But Stefan has build new seperate binary which will run on the 32 bit Intel and AMD CPUs.

1) connect to seti-beta.

SETI Beta is the test project, and did not offer binaries for Solaris x86. There is a complete different app beeing tested in the moment.
There are only two projects, which offer Solaris x86 binaries - the SETI and SIMAP. The SIMAP app must be installed manualy. But it is easy...

2) get boing manager gui interface to run so I can see progress (is this not supposed towork) should I consider a third party app that gives me info on work units? As it stands I can't easily tell any information, except how many WUs have been downloaded, or uploaded, I guess when they're done.

I am a little bit confused....
Which boinc manager do you have installed ? - The linux one ?
But you can connect remotly from every other OS with the boinc manager to the boinc client on your Solaris system. You must use the "-allow_remote_gui" option on the boinc client and have set a password.

3) How to name my Solaris host (but this is a solaris issue not a boinc issue, and I'll figure that out myself)

Did not known extactly how to do. On Solaris 10 is a complete new subsystem implemented, which I did not known.
But you can look at docs.sun.com, or search with google, or open a new thread in the unix forum here about this toppic.
Thanks for all your time, help and consideration in reading this!
right... i figured that out from the previuous comments above, as well as my own error messages (i just had to try it since nothing else seemed to be working at the time.

I couldn't easily find these, but I used the last files offered in the solaris section: "newer version 5.4.9 of BOINC, may be required to run correctly (at least for me), and also seti enhanced v5.13: archive gpg signature (of checksum) sha1 checksum" these are the ones i belive i'm running with now...

right, but i was desperate and figured *I* was different. they might work for me... boy was I wrong.

SETI Beta is the test project, and did not offer binaries for Solaris x86. There is a complete different app beeing tested in the moment.
There are only two projects, which offer Solaris x86 binaries - the SETI and SIMAP. The SIMAP app must be installed manualy. But it is easy...
I will check out simap - however this is text taken from stefan's website; what does it mean? He seems to say this file will work with beta? "Same as before as standalone package without the different sub directory name (flat archive), usable [bold]both in the main as beta project currently (what I do at now with great success, [/bold]take care, not to overwrite an app_info.xml with only the SETI@home v4 client as long you still need it): archive sha1 checksum pgp signature"

- The linux one ?
lol! no.. I finally got 5.4.9 of stefan's solaris one to connect and download work. (i think) I can run -version to let you know exactly, when i get a chance.

But you can connect remotly from every other OS with the boinc manager to the boinc client on your Solaris system. You must use the "-allow_remote_gui" option on the boinc client and have set a password.

this would be very useful. I did set -allow_remote_gui_rpc, but it never asked for a password. How can I do this?

3) How to name my Solaris host (but this is a solaris issue not a boinc issue, and I'll figure that out myself)

Did not known extactly how to do. On Solaris 10 is a complete new subsystem implemented, which I did not known.
But you can look at docs.sun.com, or search with google, or open a new thread in the unix forum here about this toppic.
Thanks for all your time, help and consideration in reading this!

Thank you for the advise.. I will research this further at Sun.

Best regards,

Jack

SIMAP is a BOINC based project which compare simliarities between proteins and compute protein domains.
The Beta comment is a old statedment which should be removed. Here in the main project we use version 5.12 to 5.15 and in the beta 5.17.

OK. You mean boinc client, the boinc manager is the gui.

Stop boinc client, change the password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg, and start again.

I think it is time make another update of the list of the available ports :

Stefan Urbat ; http://www.lb.shuttle.de/apastron/boincDown.shtml :
- Solaris x86 (i686 and AMD64)
- Solaris SPARC BOINC client 5.4.9 and SETI App for UltraSPARC I/II and IIIi
- Linux on AMD64 (Opteron), Itanium (IA64), PPC and Power CPUs, SPARC and Alpha
- HPUX 10.20/11.0/11i (V1 and V2.) on PARISC
- HPUX 11i (V.1 and V.2) on IA64 (Itanium)
- FreeBSD i386 and Alpha
- NetBSD i386
- OpenBSD i386

FreeBSD Ports ; http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/ports.cgi?query=boinc-setiathome&stype=all
- FreeBSD, source via the FreeBSD Ports

Yuri Dario ; http://groups.yahoo.com/group/seti-warp/message/1467
- OS/2 i386

Nekochan ; http://www.nekochan.net/nekoware/index.php?path=current/
- Irix

KWSN ; http://www.zadra.org/index.php?module=Downloads
- Windows MMX/SSE/SSE2/SSE3 optimized and Linux x86 SSE/SSE2 optimized
The optimized Linux app works on older GLIBC 2.x Linuxes, too.

Alex Kan ; http://tbp.berkeley.edu/~alexkan/seti/
- MacOS X optimized for G4 and G5

The ports for AIX and TRU64 are still in work.

The most third party binaries are listed on the boinc third party site (boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php), too.

By any chance would a port to the Amiga platform be considered?

Hm, very problematic.
So far I know it is a propetary OS, so the porting is very hard. Also not shure, if there is anyone here which is famliar with this OS and wan't to port BOINC and SETI. Also I am not shure if it is worth to invest the time of porting, there are very rare systems out there...
On which hardware did it run ? - Is Amiga OS released for the the PPC CPUs ? - If not, and it would run on the 68xxx CPUs, it have not the CPU power to complete any WU within any deadline.

Not only CPU power, but not enough RAM either. I know a lot of (German) sites have modifications for the Amiga, with extra external hardware and a RAM upgrade cartridge.

The ROM being proprietary? I don't it is any longer. There are lots of emulators around.

The biggest problem is that none of the gaming Amigas will do OpenGL graphics. their videochip (24bit) just won't do it.

Dotsch, could you place a post about Other Platform BOINC versions on the Boinc Forums as well, so I can sticky it there?
