After this, the client waits 24 hours & then repeats. I know that the older command-line client I used didn't have this problem--any ideas?

Wich seti app do you have compiled ? - You need a app_info.xml in your projects directory. Without any app_info.xml the boinc client try to download the seti binary for linux PPC from the servers, and this is a not supported platform, so you would not get any binaries from the seti servers.

Here is a boinc client and SETI enhanced binary for Linux PPC available :

I also have this problem on my B&W G3. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS here, and the Boinc Manager was installed with the system. however, I need to start synapic package manager and get the boinc client, otherwise it couldnt connect. I joined a team, and here is what I get:

pretty much the same thing, except I have less RAM (both physical and virtual), and only 1 CPU.

It is the same problem.
Do you have the boinc client and seti app compiled by yourself, or where do you get the binaries from.

You still need to create a app_info.xml in the projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu directory.
A sample app_info.xml :
 <app_info>
     <app>
         <name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
     </app>
     <file_info>
         <name>setiathome-5.12.hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11i</name>
     </file_info>
     <app_version>
         <app_name>setiathome_enhanced</app_name>
         <version_num>512</version_num>
         <file_ref>
             <file_name>setiathome-5.12.hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11i</file_name>
             <main_program/>
         </file_ref>
     </app_version>
 </app_info>

You have go to change the filename setiathome-5.12.hppa... to the excatly filename of the seti binary. Also you have got to change version_num to the version number (without the dot) of your binary.

I may be way off base here, but it looks like something is wrong with the BOINC client from Synaptics Package manager. I wonder if you'd be better off downloading fresh Linux BOINC from the BOINC website or from the Seti download page, put the sh file in your home folder, open a terminal and sh boinc*, then cd BOINC, then ./run_client, then open a second shell (as a default tab) and ./run_manager.

Do you get still the same errors ? - You must stop the boinc before installing the app_info.xml and the restart it again.
At the startup there should be a message "Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform" which reports, that the app_info.xml was found.

There is no offical binary for PPC Linux. But on the third party site from Stefan Urbat. They are really good tested and has also a very good performance...

That site looks like a good resource. I downloaded 64 bit Suse 10.1 OSS, since they said their AMD 64 BOINC only works with Suse and is slow with Ubuntu. But I need to get a DVD-R to burn the iso.........

You are a good guy to help in here, Dotsch. Thanks.

just as an update, I still cant get this working. I reinstalled from the package amanger, but I am still getting the same error. and no, I cant download the package from here, because I am running Ubuntu PPC, and all the linux packages are for x86. but I have faild to recieve a single work unit. things were way easier back in the olf F@H days, but unfortunantly, they dont have a linux/PPC client.

thanks for any help.

At boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php are Binaries for Linux PPC from Stefan Urbats site (http://www.lb.shuttle.de/apastron/boincDown.shtml#gnuppc) available.
I recommend you to intstall these binaries.
