News

August 25, 2004
A trio of splitters are now up and producing new work.

We plan to release major version 4 of BOINC and SETI@Home tomorrow.

A clarification about last week's fallback to an earlier DB state: all work that was uploaded during the period of August 13th to 18th was lost and so cannot be credited. As well, all work that was generated and downloaded during that period was lost to the DB and so cannot be credited. This work is being regenerated and redistributed.

Anyone know when the Seti change over to ver4 is going to happen now? Thought it was going to be the 26th so I upgraded then at CPDN. Now I can only crunch CPDN work units. I would really like to see Seti running for once, it's been a few days since it has; even before the upgrade. Since I have a Pentium HT I'm sure that lone CPDN unit would like some company.

Run 2 CPDN Wu's at once, thats what I've been doing on one computer for the last 10 days...It takes longer but your doing 2 at a time so it pays off in the end I guess... :)

I know I could but don't want to since CPDN work units take so long. I would like to participate in other projects in addition and if I start a long work unit it will be weeks till that can happen since I only have one PC available to me. For now I have Seti Classic (on SetiHide) running and BOINC (with CPDN) but will be happy when I can run just BOINC.

I'm hoping it's happening today, as I've just upgraded :-D If not, I'll just keep classic running until it does (and I have work for it ;-) )

V4 will pause and switch between projects every hour depending on resource-share, so even you now starts crunching 2 CPDN-wu you can run other projects also. ;)

HeHe, True!

I was also wondering what the new version of BOINC incorporates? I don't notice any new menu options. I guess it is just server improvements and compatibility with CPDN? I'm just waiting for the "Use your video card for crunching" option.

I don't know - haven't checked it out anywhere, but most changes are likely to be "invisible" to us - though one visible change I did notice: Under the Disk tab a new colour has appeared - it now also displays BOINC Free space ;-)

It's fun to see what you can figure out by snooping around in Google.

I'm pretty sure CPDN needs "trickle messages" because of the very long time it takes to do one work unit. It looks like they also added code to "share" with other projects even if you're in the middle of a CPDN work-unit.

It freaked me out when I first downloaded and saw it, without looking at the key first. I think it went something like "AHH CPDN took over half my disk space". Then I looked at the key and saw that it was just free space allocated to BOINC.

In the right graph, my free space is so large the it only shows a big black line for all the projects. Not really very useful.

Is that of feature of ver4 too. The "Seti/Boinc actually works for once" option. That would be nice. Oh, that was too mean. I didn't mean anything; I was jk.

*Hilarious!
I was checking in to see if some fellow Boinc-er's managed to get a few units during the last 24 hours.
I guess that answers my question :P

Okay... It looks like I missed something when I checked on things earlier, the query I ran this morning reported back 100k plus results waiting to be sent out.

Something is going on with the scheduler, as it had not handed out any work since 2am after investigating more logs.

I'll see what I can find out.

Thx m8, cause thats the way it was supposed to be understood.

Actually I'm not that disappointed, cause all starts has its problems.

What I though are EXTREMLY pissed off about is the TOTAL lack of information from the project.

I have been doing seti for over 5 years now, cause I BELEIVE IN IT, not that I wanna make credits or wu's.

So to be just a little bit polite, then the project could say

"
Sorry but we are down
"

Instead of leaving a message saying ALL IS UP AND RUNNING, and then going home for the weekend.

Get your act together in there, especailly in the information area.

I dont mind waiting, but if you guys say "all is up and running" and NONE can get any new work, then perhaps you have to look at campus.

Anyway just yet another silly thought :) :)

*Agreed, it's refreshing to enjoy/participate in a project without the usual ego enhancing power plots.

*I'm seriously tempted to make generalisation jokes about programeurs/sysops and their communication skills...ahem...never mind ;)

*Oh well, we could suggest extra funding for PR/accurate narrating skills!

In the meanwhile I'll keep switching from seti CLI 3.08 to Boinc.
That leaves me time to save for a more performant platform/extra memory.
