Why do we need to install BOINC while it works without installation?
I tried it under XP and it works if you only create manualy separate directory for it and few mor subdirectories named "CVS", "projects" and "slots" (probably it is possible to work without some of them). Also I put in it only 3 files - boinc_cli.exe, boinc_gui.exe and questionable boinc.dll. All the rest comes from the server when you attach to the project.
Any ideas? 10x :)

what exactly would be the advantage of that? particularly with the computer illiterate who may not know things like that with the computer, and may not want to mess around with such files?

seems pointless to me...

I agree with you that for the computer illiterate people is easier to run the installator and to click "OK" :)
But I meant a little bit different thing - why the installator writes in the registry when only creation of few folders and few shotcuts (yes, I know that they are also registry records) is enough for the BOINC is running (look at the CPDN's BOINC installation - no installation, only 3 files extracted in a folder of your choice)?

once again, i ask, what is the point? so what if it's written to the registry or not? it's too small to do too much
