I am very happy that things seem to be working better today. Nevertheless I am wondering if the validator was scheduled to be up and running yesterday, of if it was the result of the massive complaints posted during the weekend? First we went back to BETA so we were able to process units and then first thing Monday finally some news about credits. The board became full of critics during the week-end and lots of them were very "Intelligent". One was even addressed to Mr.Anderson and if you read carefully you will find many posts where people were complaining for good reasons. I personally never complain for the fun of it. I am professional and when I do it's because something is going wrong. I might be wrong and when I am I admit it. This time I believe that some "whiner's" posts have helped speed up switching on the validator. I am not talking about kids fight between "cheerleaders" and "whiners" but serious complaint asking real questions and real answers. Some posts in these threads are "constructive" complaints that really pointed out how bad SETI was managing the crisis. http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=2953 http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=2933 I would really appreciate your views and comments about that and if someone at Berkeley feel the need to confirm or contradict my feelings it would be even better and highly appreciated. Warm regards and happy crunching Marc -.-. --.- -.. -..- . - .-.-. -.- --... ...-- |

I am certain that the developers have been working as hard as they can to fix the problems that have been haunting the project, even without the whiners. |

I think that perhaps the team is getting some breaks. After switching to the Snap thingie, the got the u/l and d/l directories happy, and since that's working they are now able to get other functionality restored. Personally, i don't care about 'pending credits', i have about 95 or so WU to be credited, just so long as the credits tick over every once in a while i'm OK. It lets me know things are working. <a> [/url] |

> The beta project has been down since shortly after the public launch... > August 20, 2004 We are currently working on getting the alpha/beta projects working again, as well as getting new workunits generated so that when we restart the public SETI@home project there will be work to send out to the clients. After that news boinc downloaded SETI 3.08. Aren't we running on BETA now? Does all the SNAP thing being put aside ? Thanks |

Aren't we running on BETA now? > Does all the SNAP thing being put aside ? I am not sure if I have this right about what you are asking. But, let me give it a shot. The Alpha and Beta projects were shut down and the SETI@Home Powered by BOINC was "launched" and people were invited in. Then the roof fell in. At this point people were invited to go back to SEI@Home Classic because of the problems in the back-end processing. The Snap applicance was a hardware up-grade that was installed to increase the speed of the back-end processing. At this time we are still experienceing slow WU generation (for what ever reason) and there is still a scarcety of work. However, it seems like the major problems on the back end are more or less under control for the moment. So, because the application is not complete (There is no GUI for the Mac or Linux for a start) they are restarting the alpha and beta test projects to work on getting these (and I am sure other) featrures working so that they can finally shut down the SETI@Home Classic site and move that hardware over to the new project. So, the newly started projects (restarted?) will be working on the new client features and current bugs so that the BOINC Software is all at the same version level accross the three project currently launched. |
