I re-created this thread since #VI got too large for the dial-upers. Everyone is welcome to this thread and welcome to post. All I ask is that you follow the guidelines I have set for this thread, we need to keep the dial-upers in mind. Enjoy.... (-:< SETI/BOINC MILESTONE THREAD GUIDELINES: 01. You must be a current, active participant in the science of this project to post milestone messages. 02. This thread is for announcements of milestones for any BOINC project. 03. This thread will allow helping new users only if related to SETI/BOINC. 04. This thread will not allow milestones not related to SETI/BOINC or other BOINC projects. 05. This thread will not allow flaming any other users. [See this thread.] 06. This thread will not allow any profanity. 07. This thread will not allow 'stretching': no imbedded images and while quoting a post with a very long URL in it, fix it if you know BBCode, otherwise delete it or place spaces in it to break it up so it will wrap properly. Another option is to use http://tinyurl.com/ to create a new link. If you must include an image in your post, create a link to it, no thumbnails. Signature images are allowed.
01. Set "Show images as links". This will also create a link for images in signatures, but will not hide avatars. 02. Set "Hide avatar images". All you will see is the username and stats. 03. Set "Hide signatures". Some signatures have useful information, links to related sites and such and witty quotes. If you set #1 above, you will still see the information, but any images would be loaded as a link. If you set this, there will be no signatures displayed.

I still don't get why threads have to be closed at 300 posts - what's the reasoning? ### If a thread contains more than this number of posts ### only display the first one and this many of the last ones If people on dial-up have a problem with long threads, shouldn't they be using the forum features and preferences to limit the ### of posts that is comfortable for them to display? Wouldn't that eliminate the need to keep spawning new threads with versioned names? I'm looking for a serious answer. I re-created this thread since #VI got too large for the dial-upers. |

Extending the right hand in an open palm fashion is a long standing traditon to show the person you meet that you come "unarmed" and in friendship. We call it a hand shake. The spawning of long threads was a traditon dating back when they didn't autotrim threads to 75 posts. I don't think we should be so quick to throw away tradition. |

Not sure what this means here... The spawning of long threads was a traditon dating back when they didn't autotrim threads to 75 posts. I don't think we should be so quick to throw away tradition. That's one of those things that drive IT people crazy - "Why are you doing it that way?" "Because we've always done it that way" ARRRGGHHHHHHHHH |

........ This has been accepted practice since Oct. 04. Not everyone uses that "feature" in forum preferences, including myself. If you can't accepted what has been accepted by ALL, stay away. If you would like to post, stay on topic, which happens to be SETI/BOINC and other BOINC projects milestones. |-:< CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. I think that thread clutter is worse for the board than long threads. |

....I agree...that ability is built into the board..and you can adjust it using your "Message board preferences". I tried using it on that "last person...." thread and no matter what numbers I punched in, it would default to viewing only 25 new posts, when in fact there were many more. I set it to 600 and 100 and it would only show 25 posts. I will continue the practice of spawning my threads when they reach 300 posts. (-:< CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? Not sure what this means here... Well, I'm not sure that you'd ever understand "tradition". These are things done in an old age fashion. They are comfortable items that society understands. Not everyone stays up to date on "the latest thing". I, for example, would not think of not walking to the street side of my wife (to protect her), I would NOT think of not opening a door for her, I would not think of parking 1/10th a mile from a store and making her walk, I drop her at the door. None of these things are required by the new fangled rules, but I guarentee you she appreciates it. Get dial up, and open a 300 post thread, and you'd appreciate it too. |

I think that thread clutter is worse for the board than long threads. Thread clutter??? huh, start a thread and ask how many have even seen "milestone thread 0 through 5 in the last month. There is NO clutter caused by this. |

....I agree...that ability is built into the board..and you can adjust it using your "Message board preferences". If you Log Out and then Log In again, the forum preferences will take effect. If I was on dial-up, I surely would have it set to something like 25, regardless of 'tradition'. Do you think that feature was added to the forum just to thwart tradition? |
