I have 100 wu's in my seti project folder that Boinc is failing to see. This happened after I tried to upgrade my memory from 512 to 1024 mb. The computer didn't like the new memory and I had to replace the old. Afterwards the one unit waiting to upload was still showing but the 100 in the cache were not. Also, downloading new ones is not a problem.

I am using the Crunch3r seti app and his Boinc manager. The computer is running windows xp home with sp2. No viruses or spyware, I use nod32, spyware doctor, adaware, spybot seach and destroy, process explorer and several others along with firefox with the noscript extension. I'm also behind a hardware and software firewall.

I tried removing and reinstalling Boinc. This did not help. I really don't want to just toss the 100 units waiting to be processed.

Any suggestions, PLEASE????

Did the logs show something like "corrupted client_state.xml"? This is the usual log entry for this kind of error. I have heard of one person successfully recovering from this but it took MANY hours of manually editing that file. Best thing is to let it go. The work units will be sent out again and won't be lost. Has happened to me twice and is somewhat common.

Yes, it was generic ram but the specs were exactly the same as what came with the 2 computers. As far as putting it in right the computers were laptops, 2 slots each, the memory only fits in one way, there is no way to misinstall it. My daughters' wouldn't boot, mine would then start locking up repeatedly.
I have had home computers since an Amiga 2000 in 1988. Memory upgrades on too many to count, processor upgrades, one Mac overclocked (just to see if I could, hehe), 4 burnt out fans from running seti@home, all home done and repaired.
The memory offically recomended by "Dell" was 2x as expensive, we have always used generic, never had a problem with it before.

The files are still there in Boinc/Projects/Seti folder, Boinc just does not see them, or accept them as valid, don't know which.

Besides, I have this silly little problem, this computer is a laptop, and it's backlight burned out about 3 months ago. Connected it to a crt, which works ok, except that the bootup screen does not show up on the crt. The first thing I see is the sign-on screen. Now I've never had to use scandisk before so I went and googled it, it appears to want to run in safe mode. I have no way of selecting that or deselecting it when it is finished. :-(

Small rant about Dell computer... Said laptop 2 years old, never use a screen saver, screen set to power off completely 3 minutes after I stop using it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I wish it was possible to build your own laptop. Regardless, Dell will not get anymore of my business, as this is just the last of a number of problems I have had with their computers.

3) Make your changes
4) If boinc has problems because of os errors/ram errors etc you can replace boinc with your backup. After correcting your problems of course>

Believe me the client_state.xml file and the client_state_prev.xml are easy to corrupt. I've had it happen too many time to me. Any interruption while it's being written to will corrupt it and the client_state_prev.xml file which is the backup corrupts at the same time. It can be repaired but it's not worth the time. Like Steve Cressman said above make a backup of the Boinc folder and you can make all the changes you want.

It's just that in 18 years of messing with computer innards it was always the case of "figure out correct ram to install, shut down said computer, touch power supply to discharge static, insert ram, close case, start computer, continue happily with better computer..."

I have made changes to boinc and seti numerous times before, always backed up the folder. It just never occured to me that a ram installation could do something like this. Never caused a problem with seti classic (or anything else), first time I did this with Boinc, now it'll be added to my list of gotcha's, won't happen again.

Just FYI, this corrupted clientstate.xml thing has been fixed in the new dev versions of boinc and should be in 5.4.x when it's released.

Well, on 2 different computers (Dell) within 30 minutes, generic ram did not work as an upgrade. "Dell" recommended ram by Crucial that was twice as expensive as the generic ram. I was very carefull to make sure the specs on the generic ram were the same as the expensive "recommended" ram. On every other computer I have ever upgraded, generic ram worked fine.

Having a family, money is always an issue. This is one of the reasons I have purchased Dell in the past (good value for the money). But we have experienced a number of hardware failures with Dell, one came preinstalled with a spyware toolbar (you can read about that and all the complaints on the Dell support site), Dell no longer sends a OS recovery disk of any kind with it's new computers, they tend to use non standard parts making repair or upgrading somewhat hard (or impossible) to do.

So in summary, we have gone from being satisfied customers to the never again will one of those enter this house customers.

As far as the original question goes, why would a "value computer" insist on the most expensive Ram....

My daughter's is a Dell Less-inspiredon 42, with a 50mhz pentium .5, 16mb of ram and integrated graphics solution that does 8 color. It's kind of a dud, but it knows the meaning of the universe.

Also, as per rule #50 of the evil overlord list, "My main computers will have their own special operating system that will be completely incompatible with standard IBM and Macintosh powerbooks."
