every day new problems arrise. Its obvious that the servers can't cope. How long is this going to go on before this Seti/Boinc project gets abandoned? These outages cause problems in themselves, in that as soon as the servers come online again they get bogged down with the backlog of uploads and requests for WU's. If they can't get it sorted then maybe its time they admited defeat and go back to a system that at least worked. |

"If they can't get it sorted then maybe its time they admited defeat and go back to a system that at least worked." Please remember that there is no reason why you cannot run the old seti@home client for the time being. That still works perfectly well, and it is contributing valuable data. The object of the exercise is to do SCIENCE, not to top the rankings. |

If BOINC (SETI) don't get their finger out they are going to lose an awful lot of support. I've just found out 29 of the 40 odd units I downloaded the other day (17th August; 2 hours 50 mins per unit approx) are vaporware (ie, wasted a few days processing them, for no reason, why???, cause the database crashed.) For a project that is supposed to be live, ie, not beta, this is sh!te !! |

I have been tracking the BOINC effort since back when they had some sort of legal conflict with the name BOINC holding things up. Back THEN they were promising "alpha soon, beta soon after". I wasn't in the Beta or Alpha program, but I know "not ready" when I see it. BOINC SETI is not ready to be out of BETA yet. BOINC itself is barely operating at BETA level for bugs, etc. (Predictor has been stable for a few days, and thus takes the cake for continuous uptime). This has to do with more than the snap appliance and download/upload problems. Beta is where you fix things like "the core is confusing my WU's between projects". Are all new BOINC projects going to have the capability to hose the others like that? Nobody knows apparently, but it certainly seems feasible now doesn't it? We are testing "feature update" versions of the core while the current "public" version is being patched. Everybody keeps telling everyone else to go back to the classic SETI, but when they shut that down and force the move, what taste does BOINC want left in our mouths about their definition of "public release version"? I'll go back to classic either when I say "to hell with BOINC forever" or when they declare it back in BETA. So they better either swallow their pride and admit they need more time before taking on public-sized loads, or fix it fast. They bit off more than they could chew, and the longer they refuse to do what is necessary the more they alienate their contributor base. The news updating has improved at least though... |

Hello, Bear in mind that science and scientific research is not born overnight...Patience and firm belief in a research topic can take years, not to say in some cases a full lifetime of devotion. You cannot expect that this totally new approach of global networkcomputing with all its pitfalls and problems is going to be solved over one night. We all have to learn from eventual mistakes and no one is to blame for raid failures. These things happen, even when the team would have unlimited financial recources, which is surely NOT the case I presume. I'm pretty sure most of us could NOT do the job better than they are doing for the moment. In my case there is a difference between the actual registered WU and the real amount of 4000 WU less. I don't give a damn, because taking part in this event is more important than personal stats... Remember the spirit of the Olympics. Look at this thread...<br /> Patience seems to be rewarded in the end. It however seems more comfortable for most people if they are better informed of wat is happening. So the humble advice to the team is: "Do your utmost to keep the supporting people aware of what is going on...". Even on this matter there is an amelioration. Greetings to all die hard BOINC-ers from Belgium ;-)) |

You all need to RELAX! This system is new. All new systems are buggy in the beginning. My best advice is go back to SetiAtHome Classic if you cannot be patient. Please, try to remember that this about the SCIENCE, not personal egos. |
