They've been down for most of August. Good thing it's not a commercial business IT Infrastructure being run. They'd be out of business.. Hopefully the students are learning valuable lessons about IT architecture design and change management discipline. Losing data is about as bad as it gets - just about unheard of in professional IT shops.

Even when the project i snot down, I cannot download work units. All I get as a response is "now work from project", "Deferring communication for X minutes/hours".
I use a modem connection so i cannot stay connected to the internet, waiting for the screwed up BOINC server to let me have some work.
I have completed well over 1200 units in the last few years using SETI classic, but I have had about enough with their recent inefficiency/incompetence.

I have the same problem. The client reports to me:
SETI@home - 2004-08-25 09:06:50 - Sending request to scheduler: http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
SETI@home - 2004-08-25 09:06:53 - Scheduler RPC to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded
SETI@home - 2004-08-25 09:06:53 - Message from server: No work available
SETI@home - 2004-08-25 09:06:53 - No work from project
SETI@home - 2004-08-25 09:06:53 - Deferring communication with project for 1 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds

I run both the Predictor@home and the SETI@home for making use of the CPU efficiently.
