Hi all,

i'm thinking about writing a search plugin to use with the boinc wiki

i'd you'd like this, and would find it benificial, please make a post so that i have an idea if many people would want this

also i'm looking for feedback/suggestions etc.
so my first question is...
if an exact match is found, do you just want to go straight to that page, or do you always like to see the list of results?

another is,
would you prefer use google to search, or use the wiki search?
i personally find the wiki search better, and more relevent (google returns links to history pages, which isn't helpful)
my initial thoughts are to use the wiki search, as it seems better all round

any other suggestions or ideas are more than welcome :)
although there's not much to a search plugin

just incase there's any confusion, i'm intending to write a seperate plugin, that'll appear in the list of search engines in the top right of firefox, so that you just select "BOINC Wiki", type in what you're searching for, and hit enter

My preference would be a results page.

I'd have to agree. Wiki search.

I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.

THis is something I'd like to see.

Definitely Wiki search.

And I would like to see a list of results, not just go to the first page match.

Kathryn

just to clear some potential confusion, the "instant" method wouldn't just go to the first match regardless (like "i'm feeling lucky" on google does) it would only do so if there was an exact match (such as "credit") if no exact matches were found then it would display a list of results (same as hitting the "go" button on the wiki page, and always displaying results is the same as hitting the "search" button)

"instant" would be like using this URL: http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?search=credit&go=Go (note you're redirect to the credit page)

"always search" would be like using this: http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?search=credit&fulltext=Search

thanks to all for the interest, now that i know it'll be useful for others besides myself i'll invest some more time into it :)

for all those who don't know, you can find a veriety of other search engine plugins on the mozilla site
http://addons.mozilla.org/search-engines.php
with a link at the bottom to a a dedicated mozdev site with country specific plugins too
http://mycroft.mozdev.org/

there's a plugin for almost every site with a search feature

right, after a busy afternoon I've finished it and submitted it to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ :)

it's available by searching their site, or follow this link to the search results page

please test it out and report any problems, bugs or suggestions

a basic search worked under all my test conditions, and i think i've got the sidebar search working properly, but please, test it to death because i want it to be robust

hope you all enjoy

Working like a charm for me, Lee! Nice job! As far as a suggestion, having the result page open in a new tab would make it easier to jump back and forth and cut and paste as needed. Maybe there's a FF setting that would cause that to happen... hmmm.. I'll have to snoop around. But overall, I give it 3 thumbs up.

Now, is this where I plug my graphs???? ;)

ta,
as for opening new tabs, i'm sure there are "lite" versions of tab browsing extensions for just that, but i hightly recommend the Tab Mix Plus extension for all your tab browsing needs, there are enough options for anyone, and it works very well, but for your specific case of wanting searches to open in new tabs (that's the way i like it too) after installing the ext and obviously restarting firefox, open up the options for TMP (tools menu or extensions window) and go to the "events" section then click the "tab opening" tab, in the lower section on the tab there's some "open tabs from:" options, make sure "search bar" is ticked (and any others you want) and click ok (you may need to change other settings, or uninstall other extensions which might cause conflicts, to have things the way you like as tab mix plus covers everything you could want)
thumbs up for such a highly customisable browser :)

Now, is this where I plug my graphs???? ;)

sure is ;)
plug away dude
(seriously guys, his graphs are great :-D )

can someone try searching using the sidebar, i personally don't use a sidebar for searching, and would love to know if it's working correctly (it did using the plugin validator, but that's just simulates a sidebar)

Very nice. Excellent for use with the context search.

thanks

oh yes, for those who don't know, you can search highlighted text on a page with a serach engine of your choice (using any serach plugin you have, there are thousands available at http://mycroft.mozdev.org/)

to do this you'll need the ConQuery (Context/Contextual Query) extension, once installed, just hightlight a word on a page, choose "query to..." and choose the search engine you want to use

so if you want a definition, choose a dictionary/wiki engine plugin, for more info, choose an encyclopedia search plugin

and it can be used with as many serach plugins as you have/want :)

Lee, when i go to the mycroft (search result page) site i get this message "Page Not Found

The page /boinc-wiki/index.html was not found on this site."

Is there another place for the plugin?

sorry, forgot to mention that you need to have javascript enabled for the page (guessing you use NoScript)
because javascript is needed to install them (just to make it easier, all it does is copy some files to your profile folder)

it would be nice if they made that clear on their site thou!

Right you are, Lee! I even have TabMix installed on both my home machines but totally forgot about it on this one. The mind is within the top 3 things to go, you know.
I've been happily hammering away with the wiki search, both from the menubar and advanced sidebar search, and in both cases it has consistently worked perfectly. Paul's hit counter is probably overheating from all the testing. :) Looks like a job well done!

Another choice (which I use) is Context Search

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=240&application=firefox

Hilight the text
right-click the hilighted text
select Search Web for "whatever text you've hilighted"
click the desired search engine displayed in the submenu.

tab mix plus is a new one which offers even more options and customisations, worth a try

thanks for the glowing report, i'm glad it works properly for both methods :)
a question for all, is the icon suitable? considering it's the boinc wiki, rather than boinc itself, should paul's icon be used or something else? (or just stick with the existing one?)

Personally, I think the BOINC wiki icon would be a better choice.
