Go for it! it won't hurt anything to try it on at least 1 machine, I personally like the crunch times I get from linux (but not really any difference than running XP). And, you won't have to worry about any license for each computer for the OS.

wow, thats likely to open a whole can of worms ;-)

I've got both linux and xp machines and have had individual pcs using both at various times.
With the standard seti apps I found that linux usually crunched slightly faster than xp.
But since changing to Crunch3rs optimised apps, i now feel the same machine crunches slightly faster under xp.
It does for me anyway, others could be different.

I do slightly better with Linux crunching.

I am also slightly biased towards Linux, it's all I know. I wouldn't call it BETTER than XP, it is harder to use than XP, but Linux (currently) is fairly immune to all the viruses and other exploits out there that mostly target XP. With that said, you can still harden your XP just as well as Linux.

I am a control freak when it comes to my machines, and well, Linux works better for me in that regard. Nothing wrong with XP, as long as you stay on top of it.

Whether you are using Linux for boinc crunching or not, if you are fond of rebooting often, you won't like Linux at all.

I recently fell in love with Ubuntu version of Linux.
Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/, download the 600MB CD image, burn it, boot from the CD and you will have the OS which beats Windows by a mile.

I just installed XP on a new computer, including the install and updates I must have rebooted 57 times. More or less. That really annoys me. I installed Slackware on a different computer 2 weeks ago, one reboot. Much better.

I run Xandros linux on most of my distributed farm. About a month ago I moved a HD from an old motherboard with an old AMD 1800 to a new everything motherboard with an AMD X2 4400. It simply booted up and ran with no indication that anything had changed. Man I love linux.

I too find my FC3 Linux boxes to be great. They get rebooted because of me not them. 100 days up has been no problem and I am sure they would go a year if I wanted. I will say XP is good too but I dont expect a year from them although I got 6 straight months out of 2003 server and it only stopped because the licence ran out - was evalutaion type; then I went Linux ;)

I was thinking, I bet I can get a long uptime with my XP Pro.

I get about 4 to 6 weeks with XP pro on my laptop, then it crashes. I also have XP pro x64 which is based on 2003 server and it does the same thing. I have had Linux boxes with more than a year uptime.

Yeah, come to think of it, I dont think I have gone that long. My wifes laptop I have had up for 7 days now. I suspect then, based off your experiences, it will crash in a week or so. :)
