As a newb in SETI@home, I have patrolled the maze of message board threads and websites in search of info that may (or not) help me in my quest to understand what I am doing here.
I know WHY I'm doing it...for the sake of REAL, PRACTICAL Science.
I'm not doing it for some bragging rights gained from some "credit" figure contained in the right hand column of a database printout.
It came as a surprise to me however, that many people seem concerned by the amount of credit they have gained, so I checked out the FAQs on credit.
One FAQ listed is "Why did the team not listen to the participant community...?" or words to that effect.
There is a link in the answer, labelled as possibly offensive: do not look here, that I just HAD to investigate!
The link took me to a magnificent piece of modern loquaciousness that took my breath away!
However, I have two concerns:
1 Who is the author?
2 Can someone remind me of the meaning of the word obfuscate? I haven't used the word in a while, and have forgotten the correct usage :(

1. To make so confused or opaque as to be difficult to perceive or understand: “A great effort was made... to obscure or obfuscate the truth” (Robert Conquest).
2. To render indistinct or dim; darken: The fog obfuscated the shore.

[Latin obfuscre, obfusct-, to darken : ob-, over; see ob- + fuscre, to darken (from fuscus, dark).]
GOOGLE is your friend. 8-]

Of course!! :)
Wish I could remember these things... seems the older I get, the more junk I collect in my head. I reckon I need to design a filing system, so I don't lose these things!
Glad someone else can remember what "obfuscate" means, though... it's far too good a word to allow to fall into disuse ;)
