Maybe a silly question, but....

Is a Celeron equivalent to a Pentium 4, as far as optimized science apps are concerned?

cpuz says my processor is a Celeron with SSE3, and I hope I can download one of the P$/SSE3 apps for it....

Roy,

If you're speaking of this computer, the 2.4Ghz, then yes you should download the P4 version of the optimized app. I'm running my Celeron D 2.93Ghz with TMR's Version 8.1 P4 w/SSE3 optimized app and it works flawlessly.

Is that a Celeron D 320 (Prescott) you have there? Or is that a Northwood?

Digger, cpuz says it is a Celeron 320, Prescott.

Thanks for the info - I've already downloaded from Crunch3r, and I'm about to install. Cross your fingers for me!

While I'm here, one more quick q....

When I changed science apps on my Linux box, it flushed my remaining work units.
That doesn't usually happen, does it? I've got a 2 day supply (20+ WUs) and I'd hate to trash all of them!

TIA,

Roy

Roy,

Make sure you copy the app_info.xml file into the SETI@home directory along with the new app you downloaded. That's what prevents your old units from getting trashed. And of course you already know to back up your BOINC directory in full in case you need to reinstate it. You may also consider performing the upgrade while offline... physically disconnected from the internet. That way if you do accidentally trash workunits, SETI can't re-assign you new ones right away. That allows you to put your original BOINC folder back without consequence.

Thanks, digger, sounds like good tips.

The linux WU trashing must have happened because the zip I downloaded from Crunch3r had a mangled xml tag - refused to run the new app, and re-downloaded the original version - that must be when the trashing took place.

I always do backups before serious changes - and I THOUGHT I could do the change without losing pending work - but it's nice to have confirmation of that. Thanks.

Now I just have to wait for my current WU to finish crunching....

Roy
Looks more like a P4, times are about the same as I have seen for P4's 2.4 gig running Tetsuji's optomized app from June 05.

With the newer optomized all with imput from several prople you should be doing them in about 55 Min.

Hey Roy,

Looks like you got that Celeron clipping along now at less than an hour per workunit, and saved all your cached workunits as well. Nice job!

Pentium M > Celeron D ?
Does this mean that my Pentium M 1.60 GHz crunches faster than a Celeron D 2.40
GHz?
How?

I just got a new lap top with a 1.6 GHz Pentium M and it out performs my 2.66 (non HT) P4 easily. 38-44 mins vs 62-70 mins respectively. Both with crunch3rs Win optimised app. The M is clearly a fantastic cpu and proves that clock speed is not a great indicator of power.

How?

Large L2 cache of 2MByte, plus it's a modified P3 core which always was more efficient than P4's etc.
My 1.86 does units, with Crunch3r's app, takes under 38mins, some as low as 28mins.

If you go to Tom's Hardware there is an article in the cpu section showing the Intel roadmap, which basically from 2006 all new cpu's will be developed from the present Pent M (Dothan). They are also very low power.
