Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, Boinc Manager cannot connect to a local host. I have checked the communications settings (use LAN) which are unchanged, but do not know what else I can do.

Can anyone help me on this?

I have been a seti@home participant since 1999.

Thank you.

From what I have heard, the SETI dudes are having network problems. So you might have problems connecting. I was told to, "read the front page news."

So, I guess the short blerb about having, "local SSL network problems" and, "intermittent problems contacting the scheduling server" is supposed to make sense to the rest of us.

Good luck!

There are several reasons this can happen.

First off, if you have not, reboot. This sometimes fixes the simplest things.

Questions for you: Did you upgrade to a newer version of BOINC recently? Did you upgrade Firewall software recently? Did you upgrade Windows recently?

BOINC 5 now has a GUI password, for localhost it should not need it, but might.
Firewall update (and Windows updating it's own firewall) can cause your permissions to sometimes be removed.

In the File-Select Computer, leaving it blank is usually best, but some firewalls make you type in localhost.

I hope with the bits of information here, you will discover what works, and can post what you did to make it work, for others to see.

If this does not work, maybe you can give us a little more information. Like errors, etc.

I do not use firewall software - use a router instead. The only new software I have added are a couple of Windows Security Updates from Microsoft, and I've added an external (Maxtor One Touch) hard drive and installed the backup software that came with it.

I also upgraded to the most recent version (5.2.13) of Boinc Manager, but still cannot connect to the local host. I have 2 other computers, and they are running fine connected to the local host.

I am very grateful for your comments. What about that GUI Password? I have never heard of that. Please feel free to call me collect if you can, or I'll call you. My phone is (727) 898-9009.

Thank you again for your time.

Sincerely,

YOUR FIRST SUGGESTION (REBOOT) WAS THE BEST. I REBOOTED, AND LIKE MAGIC - WE WERE CONNECTED!?
GO FIGURE.

THANK YOU.

I have had a similar problem, only it happens when my system (XP SP2) is re-booted (updtaes, power, etc.). There are no error messages, just a blank manager with no projects, work, stats, etc. It does not show a connection to localhost as it does when running properly and trying "select computer" from the file menu does not help.

The only thing I found that works (and not all the time) is shutting down BOINC Manager and then re-starting it.

Don't know why it fails on some occasions and not others - any ideas from the code developers?

I am none of the code developers, but:
During boot all autostart processes and services were started quite simultaneously and if the firewall software and/or the network/modem drivers weren't fully set up before boinc.exe is up, boinc.exe can be "isolated" from being accessible via network protocols. That's why a simple shutdown and restart of BOINC helps.

You can ensure a save boot using a little script like this
@echo off
sleep 30
cd /d E:\\BOINC
.\\boincmgr.exe

saved as boincboot.cmd in your BOINC directory (just replace the E:\\BOINC by the path of your BOINC home directory). Then add a shortcut to that script file to your autostart folder ...
