List of software and the story

And here

Thus starts the beginning of the end of 'free' open-source software...

You'll see... ;)

It doesn't surprise me. I don't know if you're aware of it but as part of the "patriot act" the federal government has dictated that by a certain date (forgot the exact date but I think it's in 2008) all hardware devices (computers, game consoles, etc.) capable of connecting to the internet and all software capable of accessing the internet must include a back door to allow them to easily access systems and monitor the activities of users in the event they decide it's necessary. All hardware or software that does not comply will be banned.

Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws.

What? Seriously?
The land of the free is not so free any more then?

Protecting open source from security flaws really has nothing to do with the Patriot Act.

Also, you obviously have never read the Patriot Act, which does not describe nor promulgate policy on "back doors" with electronic devices.

And if anyone reads some of the GOV news feeds, We are getting a tracking chip embeded in state ID cards and drivers licenses(spelling?) starting this year and mandatory in 08.
For security reasons and to help find missing people(so they say).

Although not part of the original patriot act a page with some initial information on what I said is here
I'll search for more recent and detailed information and post links later.

Hell, if it had existed, the FBI would have wanted to tap Pony Express communications. Law enforcement ALWAYS wants access to any communications.

Want to hide yer discussions: encrypt them.

The problem with this, is that such backdoors will be banned in many countries outside USA. It means that Intel, AMD, Microsoft must make one version for the US market and another for the rest of the world. That will drive production costs up, and then consumer prices go up.

Do a search on the 'DragonWare Suite'...

This software has been around and in use for years, the patriot act just allows it to be used 'legally'...

WAKE UP AMERICA !!!

Not to bring religion into this discussion, but for those interested, I found this to be rather relevant...

The likelihood that these programs will be abused is staggering. The government has a powerful weapon at its disposal, and no enforceable checks and balances or accountability to anyone. And who will be the real target of this tracking system? Revelation 13:7-8 warns of a coming world leader who will hate God's people "He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast- all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb..." Christians are going to be a monkey wrench dropped squarely into Satan's plan to rule the earth, and will need to be punished. Matthew 24:9 says that in the last days "...you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me." Perhaps Carnivore, Dragonware, and cell phone tracking will be the tools that enable them to locate these insubordinate citizens.

Fine with me. Crush gov't, force it to spend it's resources on laws that actually can be enforced instead of the overwhelming amount of Barbra Streisand that it does now.

Not part of the Patriot Act (which there is only one version...so there isn't an 'original' and 'something newer'). Besides, the FBI has been asking the FCC for that for years. Nor has the Government dictated anything by '2008'.
