I'm about ready to give up and uninstall this program. It would be a shame because I've been involved with it for more than 8 years. I've have nothing but trouble this program senice it was changed. I was running fine and for no apparent reason I couldn't upload any data. Now I've bene unable to connact the seti project for more than 3 weeks. I tried attaching to the project but the application says it can't connect to http://setiathome.berkeley.edu. It says it not a valid project, which is strange since I had been attached to it for a cople weeks prior. The log says it can't resolve hostname setiathome.berkeley.edu. Then I see it saying it can't resolve google.com or yahoo.com, both of which I can access fine with my browser. There are NO configureation issues with my PC, the problem seems to be with the application. I'm one keystroke away from uninstalling this application. This is my last attempt in trying to get it working. Can you help? |

I agree with your complaint and I'm also considering uninstalling the whole damn thing. Ans you're right that this would be a shame because I'm also almost 10 years involved in this project. |

There are NO configureation issues with my PC, the problem seems to be with the application. The fact Boinc Manager can't connect to setiathome.berkeley.edu nor to google.com or yahoo.com is due to a problem that is very probably related to a Firewall. Boinc needs to be able to connect to Internet and Boinc Manager needs connection to Boinc. For detailed explanation on this for Windows please see here. Read the News at the homepage Have a look at the Technical News Look if your question is not answered at the Boinc Wiki Best greetings, Thierry |

Hi guys, If you look at the tech news in the SAH homepage, you'll see that there has been some difficulties during the holiday weeks. All of us have been facing some difficulty or other: unable to download/upload, credits not being granted, failure to contact the scheduler, etc. Since the shutdown of SAH Classic, all those user migrated to SETI/Boinc, which is part of the problem. I agree that the documentation could be a little more clear, specially in the networking troubleshooting, but please bear in mind that all this is maintained by volunteers and scholars. Please take a look at this link. It contains several tips and commom problems. If you're not able to fix after that, try posting a few more details of your problem, like the error messages generated by BOINC Mngr, ok? Regards, Wander |

Hi Jeff, I know the frustration you have had, but you have some good credits, so did I and hated to give up. I was in the same situation as you and almost deleted and quit the project, too. But I gave it one last try. This may not work for you, I don't know what version, OS you are using, but I have XP and the latest version of SETI. Two things you can do that may or not work, but helped me: 1. Click on Project; click on update on your BOINC window with SETI project selected. Wait a day or so and see what happens checking the Messages. If nothing happens click on Reset. Wait a day or so and see what happens checking Messages. As someone on the boards said, Patience is a virtue with BOINC. 2. Uninstall Boinc by using the uninstall software in the Windows control panel. Drag to Recycle any remaining downloads programs on desktop. Empty recycle; you should now have as good an unstall as Windows can do. Do NOT delete your data files or even look for them! Next, go to the SETI home page and download the LATEST version of BOINC. Go from there to make connection with BOINC and SETI, remembering your passwords, etc. Set your machine to Run Always, if it is possible for you and you have enough disk space and memory to do so. I have about 760 MB Ram and 80GB disk size with a fast processor 2.x. Now let it run a day or so...my screen saver actually worked after I did this! Now the Windows machine is doing multitasking; running two WUs at once and alternates the resources of my machine to finish them. Well, hope this helps! Don't give up yet. Best, Dr. Bob Robert L. Hi Jeff, again, I failled to mention some more things that really were helpful to me. First, I read everything I could about setting preferences in the WIKI...I found the defaults that Boinc sets are just not as helpful as I thought. So, I read everything on Preferences and about setting them. I found some new things that worked. Read and see what you think; you have almost the same OS, memory as I have only I have slightly more. The WIKi doesn't tell you to make the General prererences the same or very similar as your Home preferences, but try it. That helped my machine's performance and seemed to get me in touch with Berkeley when before it would not. As you can see, I have about three machines and use Home, School and Work preferences for them. I allow differences for each machine because of their HD size, memory, etc., but try hard to keep basic General Preferences, when used, d/l amounts, etc. similar, at least to the three. Also, I found out if you set up a new account, hoping this would erase the old and I could start over doesn't do much. Just gives you more accounts that you can NOT get rid of. Fortunatley, I found BOINC uses your last account as apparently, Default and operates under that. The email you register with apparently IDs your account not your ID name. After you d/l and reinstall your new version of BOINC. give special attention to the preferneces and their settings. Should you need help off the message board, use 0802_s@charter.net and I can share my errors and things NOT to do...(smiling) Best, Dr. Bob Robert L. Hanson, Ed.D. |

Hi Jeff, Thanks Bob, I'm running XP with plenty of diskpace and RAM. It seems that I can't establish a connection with the SETI project, even tought I copied the URL directly from their website. Guess I'll wait qa few months to see if they can work out the bugs in the application and try again. Thanks again for your advice! |

Check to see if you can place Boinc and ALL its exe. files, including BOINC manager, in an "exception" state. That will allow you to get to SETI and them to get to you through the firewall. I turned off the firewall because I am behind a router. Also, if you are running Norton Anti-Virus (or others) do the same thing. I have it "excepting" Boinc (little TV screen, exe. files) and Boinc manager that needs to contact the web site. After these two things, it went better and worked for me! Other posts here seem to indicate this is a problem for BOINC, firewall and anti-virus users and I followed the suggestions. Can you get to the SETI site through your normal default browser? Search SETI and go to site? If not you may want to check your browser settings and comm with your ISP. Although, if you d/l BOINC, from their site (BOINC) it means you can get there; but if you didn't d/l it from SETI, do you know you can get there? Just do a quick check. Best, Bob Robert L.
