Message 224915 - Posted: 3 Jan 2006, 3:04:48 UTC - in response to Message 224541.

A year from now SETI will continue to have big problems like the one is occurring and nothing will be any better. Classic SETI will always be the best!

According to those who know, Classic SETI was fraught with problems -- none of which are visible to the end-users.

If that's true, how would you know?

1. well with old seti i did not get the 40% client errors all the time?

Thats cause you didn't notice it, cause the old classic cruncher didn't report that now did it?

It has been stated that because the drives are at close to capacity and other issues and a large batch of "bad workunits" were issued. I have a few of those also... So at this point "We are Free to express "issues" in the heat of any battle!" When those Individuals are allowed to get them off his or her chest... Then Positive things can start to happen, that is how the majority respond...

I "personally" am really starting to understand this it the key to the Success of Seti BOINC and Classic. Yes we all understand that other BOINC Projects may not appeal to everyone. Those coming in should take a moment to look to see if there is something that could have appeal as a backup project. This helps to smooth the outages. No I am not a Cheerleader, I am one of those "so call computer professionals" and pragmatic... Seti IS My First Choice, "they" are out there!

@Pappa,

I completely agree with you. However, I don't appriciate being attacked by someone. Just like anyone else on the boards. I understand people need to let out frustrations, are upset because of one reason or another. Im definatley no "computer professional", no never claimed to be. I know basic knowledge to get me by with my computers, and thats it. And SETI has and always will be my "first choice". But I will defend myself and others when it becomes personal. There is absolutely no need for personal attacks on anyone just because they are pissed off at a computer program that either doesn't work on their computer or they don't want to take the time to figure it out and sit and bitch and complain and start personal attacks on someone who they know nothing about.

Ok, Im done venting now.

Ok I want to tell everyone that this thread is related to BOINC database problems and issues. NOT your personal attacks or trolling. If you want to fight then do it in a thread YOU created. Now PLEASE only post if you have a BOINC issue.

My intent was not to attack what you said, only point out that I "also" have suffered many Seti Workunit ERRORS. After looking at all the Forum threads about Upload/Download and various -9 or Scheduler can not be contacted... So with little information and a new outage coming up Wednesday or Thursday. I really wanted to difuse a lot of the NEGATIVE CR@P flying around.

As I Offended You, then I Appoligize..

Al,

My post was not intended for you at all. I have nothing but more than respect for you, and you have never, ever posted anything as an attack to anyone that I have ever noticed. I was just typing along, and meant to break it up, but I got quick on the button. I appologize that I made you feel you offended me, as you did not. :-)

I also agree with the negativity going around. It sucks. You try and help someone, and you get flamed, cursed at, yelled at, complained to, and picked on. I hardly ever, ever reply to people who have to post negative stuff, but when it becomes personal, what do you do?

@Jason,

I never meant to post non-thread related stuff. I appologize for doing so. But I'm not gonna sit here and allow someone to post personal attacks and not do anything.

Back to the topic, I just downloaded another WU about 15 minutes ago. But, occationally I'm getting this:

1/2/2006 7:56:33 PM|SETI@home|Started download of 24fe05aa.16691.834.17324.1.18
1/2/2006 7:57:14 PM||Couldn't connect to hostname [setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu]
1/2/2006 7:57:14 PM|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of 24fe05aa.16691.834.17324.1.18: system I/O

My moms computer is downloading fine as well, unfortunatly with her living else where I cannot check her messages to see whats going on, plus she never leaves the computer running 24/7. I will check it out tomorrow when I go up and see.

Jeremy

Yes this becomes more Off Topic

I have 5 computers in front of me (and others in the garage). My Laptop has issues getting work and the Message Tab went from RED to "retries." It is out of Seti Work to do (Seti BOINC 4.45)... I have other machines in the house that have no issues... So if I were to look at it realistically with my diversity of Computers and Operating Systems, it goes back to Scheduler on either the Server Side or the Computer side... When I press the "Retry Now" button and then get the retry in x.xx.xx only have to surmise that after outages there is a "larger" issue with the Scheduler Server at UCB... I have machines that have NO Issues and Machines that have issues that are "In Front" of me...

Set IT and Forget IT DOES NOT Work Yet! Even with 5.2.xx. So there is still a ways to go. My machines are a Mix of Win2k WinXp and 2003 Pro/Server.

An Important Part I Will Note: If you are running an older Version of Seti Core Client, You really need to consider an UPGRADE... The Core Client does not Automatically Upgrade.. The Client Does... When the Seti Enhanced Hits Hell will be out for Lunch...

I was getting a few of these yesterday, however to see it again this morning is a bit surprising... I was attempting to look at status on one of my machines.

Warning: mysql_pconnect(): Too many connections in /disks/koloth/a/inet_services/boinc_www_https/share/projects/sah/html/inc/db.inc on line 16
Unable to connect to database - please try again later Error: 1040Too many connections

Yeah, I'm getting a lot of those. When trying to reply to your message it popped up. Another bottleneck somewhere?

Seti server is being swamped I think. I've seen the complete site go off for up to 5 minutes at a time, plus we have an influx of people with download problems again. Or did UCB get run over by a river? ;)

I noticed the site go down for a few minutes earlier. Well I see I am not the only ones getting errors on WU's.

Aaahhh....the good ol' splitters are disabled. Looks like our friends at Berekeley are letting the WU's Catch up for deletion and such. Should reduce some of the traffic errors on the site...no?

SETI BOINC SUCKS!!!!!!!!!

... and it sucks so badly that no one wants to run it, and it isn't generating any resultant work.

Oh, wait a second! BOINCstats says 711,000 hosts are running and 29 million credits granted just yesterday.

Maybe it doesn't suck after all.

My point is that while we know something of the Classic problems (based on what some at the project have said), we didn't see things like database outages or the validator/transitioner backlogs. We know that Classic had a directory full of work, and when someone asked for work it gave 'em the next file no matter how much it'd been crunched because we can see the file names.

... but we see those problems with BOINC because BOINC (for example) only gives credit when work is validated.

We also see interruptions that are allowed under the BOINC design that were a bigger problem for "pure" Classic.
