... not dual channel yet (still need the other ram in other pc) Would dual channel memory be a huge improvement?

At least 5%, maybe more.

Like Grant said, yes. Several reviews / comparisons I've read also strongly recommend mem with very fast timings. They seem to be favored by much more in AMD chips than with Intel's. I'd post links but I'm watching the kids in a minute.

The amount of benefit surprised me. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. I have 2 virtually identical rigs (both XP2800+ oc'd to 2364 [though one shows as a 3200+], Asus A7N8X Deluxe, HD, psu all the same) except one has Corsair XMS 3700 (8-4-4-2) and the other has Corsair XMS 3200 low latency (5-2-2-2). The one with the tighter RAM completes a unit on average 10-15 minutes faster. That's surprising since we're talking about 1:05 for the faster one, 1:15-1:20 for the other one. That's roughly 20-25% faster on this kind of processing just from more aggressive timings.

Without love, breath is just a clock ... ticking.

Hi all,
Can someone point me in the direction of a processor wu crunching time web site ( if there is such a thing ) as i'm looking to get an amd x2 4200 or 4400 and want to know the difference the extra 512kb cache has on the 4400 for crunch times.

Muchly ta,

Babyface UK

I have AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual Core 4200 its average wu times are 1hr/7min/38sec this is 512kb/L2.

I also have AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual core 4800 its aveage times are 1hr/4min/44sec this is 1MB/L2 Both are running optimized clients.

I am running also an AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual core 4400 and my times are somewhat under the 45 minutes.

Opteron 144, FSB 200 MHz, HTT 1000 MHz, 1800 MHz core speed, SSE2&3, socket 939
512 MB DDR-400 memory non-ECC, not dual channel yet (still need the other ram in other pc) Would dual channel memory be a huge improvement?

AMD64s I'm talking about all have SSE2 and DDR-400 nonECC as well

Happy new year!

Dan

Not sure about AMD & dual channel memory.
My P4A 2.4GHz+865G with dual channel crunch faster than singal channel ave~15%.

Use A64Tweaker to check & optimize.

Happy crunch.
