my preferences in the accounts page imply that boinc may use gigs of space. I'm confused.
any help would be appriciated.

Gigs? How many gigs?

Try to set your preferences to use 0.5GB
There's really no need for Seti to use over a gigabyte of room on your harddrive.
The work units are only 354KB per unit, plus in all it'll take maybe 30MB to crunch.

There may be a numeric overflow at 2 or 4 GB specified. Try numbers smaller than this.
