on my comp boinc allways uses up 100% of the cpu power and everything is slow someone said to me my computers life will not be so long if i have BOINC hammering away at my cpu all the time does anyone know how to make it use less of my cpu power? |

There is a task to limit the CPU usage, it could be awhile before it is implemeted though. If your CPU has appropriate cooling the difference in life expectancy will not be noticeable. I personaly belong to the school of thought that says keeping the CPU at 100% is better for it than using it ittermittantly. In most cases it is not the heat that kills electronics but the change in tempurature that does it. So I tend to turn my computers on and leave them on until there is a reason to turn them off and I like them working so that the tempurature stays more constant. But neither this school or the school that says turn it off/run it low have enough data to prove their point so it is up to you. John Keck BOINCing since 2002/12/08 |

> yes i suppose but what tmperatures should i keep it between? > > This is difficault to state as it depends on your hardware. My AMD 2000XP+ runs usualy between 45 C and about 55 C. Its pretty hot today so its currently at 55 C. I would probably allow my cpu to reach a maximum of 60 C before i become concerned about the temperature of it. Jamie |

you can use only 100% or 0% of your cpu. I have had seti running for 2 years 24/7. as long as the temp is OK (under 50) then your OK ttyl Jeff (Nightowl) All your answers in one spot: http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/transition.php ===== If you dont like Boinc, then go back to classic seti. |

karl-- I agree with both answers. I run an AMD 1.2gig CPU (Thunderbird). The max. "die" temp on this one is 90 degrees C. Mine cruises at between 50 and 55 most of the itime without a case fan (yet) and on heatsink and CPU fan only--with the side of the case removed. I run a haf-gig of DDR RAM, and nothing is slow. BOINC goes 24/7 at 100% and I still multitask some heavy MS programs like Powerpoint, Word, and Access, with no slowdown. My OS is XP Pro. Maybe your problem is more RAM oriented than CPU, expecially if you are running in the gHz realm. Tohi - Ed |

A CPU can run at 100% constantly without any risk to its lifespan as long as you can keep it cool. <a> [/url] |
