Really?

I like Credit. I can not sell them, eat them, trade them for a new CPU, however, they tell me how far I have journeyed in my personal quest.

It is like one of those Ped-O-Meters that let you know how far you have walked. Some day it will indicate I made it around the world, one mile at a time.

I agree, but I try not to lose sight of the larger purpose here. I don't feel it's inconsistent to pursue credit at the same time that I am supporting the science. I'm not so limited that I must be motivated by only one reason, and I'm sure you also have varied reasons for participating: perhaps to learn more about your home computer's operation and capabilities; maybe you enjoy the dicipline of monitoring the software (been doing lots of that lately); maybe you like the fact that otherwise unused CPU cycles are being put to use. Our personal motivations as contributors, though varied, are all valid, alone or in combination.

Ah, finally the voice of true reason! I whole-heartedly agree with those above me and their sentiments. The holier than tho, that preach the "evil" of credits are only fooling themselves.

"I crunch purely for the science", is the most bogus statement I've heard followed by the infamous, "You can't buy anything with Credits, so they are unimportant". Well doing it purely for science damn well doesn't buy you anything either. If you truly want to "help science", box your computer up and send it to a scientist.

The credit system at least gives us a visual reminder of our contributions to the project, and in the past using the credits to foster friendly competition has been a very effective tool for getting new people to participate in the project that probably wouldn't have given it a second glance otherwise. Do I live or die based on credits? ABSOLUTELY NOT, but they are an integral part of what makes the SETI Experience, and deserve to be recognized as such.

Credits are a huge part of the SETI program, Yes they have no value in the real world, but they do show you and others what you have achived and that says alot about you and your progress in the project... CREDITS are HUGE...

Giving credit for a work is a must...If some one built you a house or made you somhig and they asked for credit, would you give them a little name plate on the house?? Im assuming that you would, if not then your a not worthy of the house..

Give credit where credit is due...credit doesn't have to be "worth" anything , just the credit for a job well done is enough.

Sad to say, but the little old Lady down the Street fell and broke her hip, so it will be a while before she can use her walker to come visit me....;o)

It's simple. Credits show that the work units were processed. No credit shows nothing! The science doesn't work if the work units are not processed. All it does is waste time and energy.
