With all the recent troubles, and opinions out there, I also begin to wonder if SETI is worth crunching for. Am I wasting my time? Virtually for nothing? And if so, should I give my processor time to another, more benificial project? Or should I continue devotion to SETI? Thought about running a few BOINC projects at once but, don't know if I want to commit to it. What do you think we all should do? http://www.goodsearch.com/nonprofit/university-of-california-setihome.aspx |

There will be soon released a new setiathome science app with a 11 times higher sensitivy and a lot of more science computing, which improves the science use drasticly. But there are a lot off differnet boinc based projects, which do also interesting and important science. At least you have to choose the project based on your personal preferences. |

Putting these 2 together means, attach to more than 1 project. The question is which project is more beneficial than the others.....oh the choices. Live long and crunch. Used to be...Seti was the only one...now there are many distributive computing programs to choose from...i think a number that's more important to shoot for now is TOTAL BOINC CREDITS...so for those with a competitive nature...if you want to be king of the mountain...there's a bigger mountain...more and more i think we should measure our crunching by how many total BOINC credits we've racked up...the goals are bigger...and there's a greater chance than ever to participate in research that benefits humanity. By NOT crunching, you're wasting your computer's time. It's not "virtually for nothing". Seti will be back, the WU's will get uploaded/validated/credited and things will get back on track. So there's problems occasionally, it's not the end of the world, just a little hiccup. Not sure if you want to commit to another project? Try one, any one. When Seti comes back fully, you can drop the share of comp time the other project gets or detach from the project all together(after, of course, finishing any WU's you might have and reporting them). No harm, no foul.Better to do SOMEthing with that computer time than do nothing. JMHO |

It's of course your own decision, if you want to crunch Seti or not, and I'm sure some of the other small projects would be thrilled to get your processor power. So it's all up to you, how you feel about Seti, the outages, the server overloads, etc. Personally I have set Seti to 20 % in my portfolio, as I think they'll always have a share, because it's actually the people at Seti, who made it possible for me to join the other projects through developing BOINC. So my loyalty will be here no matter what! I also think that the guys here are up against some difficulties, the people at some of the other projects don't have, according to money and hardware, and even facing these, they're doing a great job, time after time overcoming the problems. So this is the mere fact that my loyalty is with this project. As for the science in trying to find ET, Ok, I do run other more scientifically relevant projects for 80 %. But again, if it hasn't been for these guys here, the science of distributed computer projects would have looked much different. "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

Spiritual Genesis: With all the recent troubles, and opinions out there, There are always lots of opponions out there when SETI has a hick up - small or big ;) Am I wasting my time? Virtually for nothing? Well, if you believe in what we are all trying to do here, you wouldn't waste your time ;) Thought about running a few BOINC projects at once but, don't know if I want to commit to it. The level of commitment will always be up to you - but I should mention that the SETI-guys actually incourage people to run more projects ;) The great thing about BOINC is you can choose how much CPU time you want to give each project - and thereby the level of your commitment to any given project you choose to participate in ;)[/quote] What do you think we all should do? I think we should all make our own decitions, based on our own personal interests ;) The Gas Giant: SETI has too many people, the other projects have too few. Putting these 2 together means, attach to more than 1 project. Well said Dan (Burr) Michel: i think a number that's more important to shoot for now is TOTAL BOINC CREDITS I've done that ever since I attached to my second project *lol* Fuzzy: Too much to quote just for a "Well said" ;) |
