Matt might be playing a gig, but have you forgot about Jeff Cobb? If they don't appear too worried about this, then why does everyone else feel the need to worry? They know it's going to be OK.

Message 208772 - Posted: 10 Dec 2005, 4:01:06 UTC - in response to Message 208756.

The people at Berkeley are pulling their hair out trying to get this fixed. Just because they don't say much ...

You think there is REALLY anyone there at all?

Matt is off playing his 'gigs', and the rest(if there are any) are continent-hopping. I doubt anything will happen now before Monday. It's on autopilot, heading for the mountain.

Gee, they have a life outside of work. Isn't that a concept?? I think we should write UCB and demand that all the people who work on this project at their university are to be required to be there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, give up their life, give up their family, just to please us, volunteers.

They've been working on it all week. Who knows who else works there, as they probably don't bother posting here. You nor I nor anyone else here knows what goes on behind the scenes. Give it up.

Well, if they aren't there 24/7 trying to fix something broken, they should be.
Does this sound like they're "tearing their hair out"? Sounds like getting out of town to me.

In the IT world, there is real life, and then there are the extra-ordinary times when all else gets forgotten to do the super-human thing to get a system back up. It comes with the territory - IF you're committed to your job.

Don't make excuses for them.

Who's making excuses here Angus??? No one. I simply stated that these people have a life outside of here. Yeah, it is real world, does someones own life not exist in a real world?

And 2nd, and I have said this numerous times, along with a lot of other people, this is a VOLUNTEER program for us. They don't answer to us. We volunteer to run it, and we also can volunteer to not run it.

Matt might be playing a gig, but have you forgot about Jeff Cobb? If they don't appear too worried about this, then why does everyone else feel the need to worry? They know it's going to be OK.

Tony said it right. Why does everyone feel that this is something for all of us to worry about, if they are not too worried about it themselves, and are working on it at their own pace to make sure they don't screw things up? Not that hard to figure out here.

<shrug> whoever that is. Does he post here?

If they aren't worried then they should have to time to post current status - techie and non-techie versions. May as well turn on the web-cam so we can see them sweating over it, if indeed it's really being worked on day and night.

They post news when there is news. News being defined as something new. Lack of news=lack of anything new. Lack of anything new, see old post.

Hmmm, I wonder if Matt has groupies? I don't know where that came from, ....just thought of it? If so, does his wife know????

Ahhhh, heck, nevermind, don't really want to know.

Having all those 'downloading' SETI results is screwing up the BOINC CC- refusing to fetch work elsewhere. Another scheduler bug perhaps?

Perhaps. Depends on your definition of "bug". It's doing exactly what the design spec says it should, treating "dowloading" work as being "present", because it is assumed that the work will arrive any second. Unfortunately, the effect right now is that SETI is "lying" to the scheduler, because that work isn't going to arrive very soon. So, the last discussion I heard was that the time value of the "downloading" work should be charged against only the project it's coming from, and not the total cache setting. I have no idea if that will be the final decision or not, but I'm quite sure that _some_ fix for this issue will be in a forthcoming BOINC release.

NOBODY claims that BOINC is perfect. But once again, even this scheduler issue, which affects a very small number of people (enough SETI work stuck in "downloading" status to where a single result from another project, added to that total, would exceed cache size; other projects all with negative LTD; no work from any project in "Ready to run" or "running" status) comes back to being a SETI problem, or at least a SETI-caused problem, and not a general BOINC problem.

Suspend SETI - problem solved. Resume when the servers are back to speed.

Angus

Servers do what Servers are told to do... They can be accessed from around the world... Just because a Human is not sitting in front of a machine does not mean that the servers are not doing what they are told to do... I have seen "posts/updates" at 2:00am... I have seen the server status page realign Server Processs...

Matt might be playing a gig, but have you forgot about Jeff Cobb? If they don't appear too worried about this, then why does everyone else feel the need to worry? They know it's going to be OK.

So at this point GO DONATE MONEY to Hire More "Qualified Help!" Or Purchase newer Servers... I am tired and headed to bed... Even Seti BOINC is working... I do have to admit I have a a Seti Enhanced Beta that is still waiting... But it will happen..

My Machines have work (even though backloged)... Which allows me time to Kabitz in the Forums...

Al

Gnite!

Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project.

I have 2 WU to be uploaded, since three days !!! Each time the upload starts, the transfer speed is 0.07KBS ! What is this ? I removed/erased the firewall ! No change ! The browser (Safari) works fast, Mail transfers fast, when I upload to .Mac, it goes fast ! It does not seem to come from my machine but from Seti receiving computer ! How can we alert people at SETI so that they unlock/debug the receiver ?

Relax and read other posts and threads here, read news on the main page and Technical News. Everybody has the same problem, and "people at SETI" are aware of it very well.
Calling for them now is like calling 911 again and again when firemen are already here and started their work.

I could understand it if the "dispatcher" sounded like a hot chick, and let's face it, your house just burnt down. You'll need somewhere to sleep

90 uploads waiting.
this means that since the problems started (monday?) I have only managed to upload about 15, maximum. (I crunch about 21 a day.)
About 2-4 days worth downloaded, with about 10 unfinished downloads.

I "Disable net access" and am going to try again sunday evening.

Am I worried/bothered/upset. Hell NO! I am getting work to do, so the rest will work it self out in due corse.

Foamy is "Lord and Master".

I have 15 waiting to return. I would like to point out that this has happened before and will probably happen again sometime in the future. It doesn't make it any less frustrating for us, but we must remember that the SETI project does have limited resources and is gaining in popularity all the time. Bit of a victim of their own success really.

Think about it this way. "Chuck a pebble in a pond, get a nice splash and a few ripples. Chuck a pebble in a teacup, get a nice mess and a lot of clearing up"

I got a new problem

10-12-2005 9:37:56|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed with a return value of 500
10-12-2005 9:37:56|SETI@home|No schedulers responded

Did one manualy at

10-12-2005 11:08:09|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed with a return value of 500
10-12-2005 11:08:09|SETI@home|No schedulers responded

because I had one wu to report, since it kept trying every 75 sec. or so I suspended trying to connect to the network.

Got enough wu's to work on.

Seems like I'm able to upload about 1 unit every 6-8 hours.
I'm crunching 1 every 3 hours.
For me anyway, I'm on the wrong side of the curve and will
eventually run out of work. Can't get more work till the ones
waiting to send get moved.

The status and technical pages both suggest that the situation
is getting better and is clearing itself up.

Not seeing that here.

I've been around long enough to know that Murphys Laws tend to
become modified somewhat when there is an optomistic message
on the technical news page. Bad karma to prematurely claim victory.

Murphy's Law and Seti@Home
Normally it's;
"Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong"

When there is a posting on the home page suggesting that things
are on the mend;
It's - "Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong"

When there is also a posting in the Technical News Section describing
just how pleased Poor Matt and the crew are with how well things are
coming along towards resolution;
It's - "Everything that can go wrong, has gone wrong. At the worst
possible moment and with the worst possible effect"

All this is in Jest of course. Matt and everyone else in the lab are the
greatest. Really. Hope Matt's feeling better. I happy holiday to all.

Steve

PS: I don't know who said it but remember.... "This too, shall pass"
