Message 203548 - Posted: 5 Dec 2005, 8:15:53 UTC

I've been reading through complaints about switching over to BOINC. I feel really frustrated and just want to say:

I very much appreciate all the hard work UCB and other projects have put into BOINC. They've done a lot to help science and, in turn, the world. I do not find BOINC too complicated. I think it is very easy to set up and understand, and I am sorry that some people don't seem to appreciate all of UCB's work.

Thanks again, guys, for letting me donate my CPU cycles to good causes. :)

i've said it before...i'll say it again...i like BOINC!...it gives me the chance to diversify my crunching efforts to include new projects...and in the long run it's going to be able to do a better job for SETI as well...SETI BOINC...it's new...it is different...and if you give it a chance it'll work well for you too.

I want to complain too.

Ever since I installed Boinc it has worked perfectly well. I had no trouble crating new Boinc accounts, installing the software, downloading, processing or uploading work units, connecting to servers or getting my credit or anything like that. I've found it simple to use and most of the time I don't realise it's there.

It's not fair. I feel like I'm missing out by having it work so well. Why can't I have the problems that all those other people have? At least then I would have something to complain about and it might make me appear more interesting.

I feel like some sort of pariah.

Why oh why does this Boinc work so well?

It's good to hear from other people that are having the same problems. I just feel like not quitting. It makes me so mad.

You sound like my mother, she could complain the legs off an Arcturian Megadonkey and not even Deep Thought could convince it to go for a walk afterwards.

Hmmm, don't think I'm quite old enough to be your mother Simon. She sounds like a fearsome woman where as I'm sweet and nice like a fairy.

..and look, I got minused. Looks like the sense of humour police are on patrol again.

My Mum would pack supplies and give you a compass, then still complain when you got back late and didn't buy her a souvenir, then complain at the mess of your trousers and shoes and how i treat this place like a hotel.

How long has BOINK been available? I just figured it was new... a next generation of SETI. Has BOINK been up for a while?

I also have to agree, BOINC is great. I'm attached to 4 projects, I can set which ones to run when i want, let them run for how long i want, I alternate between the 4, right now I'm doing Seti and Rosetta, then I'll kick in Einstein, and Seti Beta. What more could you ask for? My CPU sure stays hot. Hehe. Way to go to all the folks at Berkeley!!! Keep up the hard work, then take a good vacation. :-)

I think the bata test of BOINC started in December 2002, I think it was opened up to the public in the first quarter of 2003. I am sure someone can correct me if my dates are wrong.

as remember...i signed up with SETI/BOINC sometime in july 2004...the "official" opening was a few days before i joined...if i recall correctly...i looked my one "orphan" workunit...and it was sent out to me July 20th, 2004...so the "official" opening was somewhere that month.

My first post wasn't 'till august 11th 2004...during an outage of some kind...i was asking for "a little more information"...and of course i was abused by Pascal in my first thread...but that didn't stop me...i stayed with the good ship SETI/BOINC through good times and bad times...even times it takes a week for the page to load on the boards...'cause i think it's worth it.

My first post was after lurking (and reading) for some months here. I converted to BOINC July 17 2004, but didn't post until Oct. 28 when asking how credits worked.

Let me add that I second all those who've said before here that BOINC is good. I didn't have any negative feelings about the switch and although many things were confusing in the beginning (as the credits), I quickly got used to it.

@Siran: Good to see you back. That was a short timeout. :)
