Message 202085 - Posted: 3 Dec 2005, 16:15:08 UTC

The current version of BOINC is 5.2.11, although after trying probably 5 or 6 versions, they all do the same thing. I've tried everything from 4.2 something to 5.2.l3. I am running Windows XP Pro on my computer.

After installing and opening BOINC, I click on File, and Select Computer. Enter 'localhost' for the computer name. I click OK and on the bottom it says 'Connecting to computer' then says disconnected. A message pops up saying 'Connection Failed'. Because of this, I am unable to proceed to add a project.

I checked the firewall (Windows Firewall) and unset and reset BOINC, boinccmd and boincmgr as exceptions. I connect with a Cable Modem, and have a Lynksys Cable/DSL router also.

I've unistalled, rebooted, reinstalled over and over and over again, with no luck.

Also, at this time, when I enter 'localhost' for the computer name, the password field is filled in, though before it was not automatically filling in, and I don't remember what was changed to fill this field in. Though this is the name (localhost) I read in any documentation I find, I'm unclear as to what this should be or why....

What am I missing? And, why is this so difficult for me to set up? I work with computers every day and this has been quite frustrating to set up. It makes me want to give up on it.

This is certainly not as simple to set up as Seti Classic was...

I apologize if this has been asked, but I couldn't find anything specific to this problem.

As you have been using different versions, I think the easiest and safest way will be to start over again from scratch: uninstalling Boinc, delete the entire folder as you don’t have any WU anymore and install the latest version.

Good luck.

As you are using a cable/dsl router that probably has an inbuilt firewall, mine does, can you check that it also has ports 443, 1043 and 31416 open.

Port 1043 is required to connect to local host, or if is already in use by another program, I'm informed that ATI graphics control panel also uses this, for instance, then BOINC will use 31416. Port 443 is the SSL (Secure Socket Link) required to communicate with Berkeley.

I agree with Thierry.

Up to about 5.2.10 or so, the boincmgr required a carriage return in the password file, and boinc did not. Now, that is supposed to be fixed.

I tried this also. I uninstalled the program, deleted any folders, removed any entries in the Firewall program, and even removed the entries in the Registery. This did not help. But thanks for the suggestion....

We can try following:
Close Boinc Manager, be sure using the task manager that boinc.exe is not running anymore, go to the command prompt and type

netstat –a

Do you see port 1043 as being in use?

OK. I will admit not as much experience with the router as I could have so I'm not sure how that should be configured. I will look into this, though everything else on my system seems to run ok without any extra configurations.

I will get back to you on this and let you know how it works. I'll need to ask for help here to figure out the settings on the router, or if nothing else, look at the documentation. Thanks.

To be sure, did you add boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe again as exception in the list of programs in the Windows firewall after installing Boinc again?

Yes, boincmgr.exe, boinc.exe and boinccmd.exe are all added as exceptions.

Do you have a
gui_rpc_auth.cfg

file under the Boinc folder?

If not, close Boinc Manager and create a file with that name. It must be empty but must contain a carriage return.

After this try launching the Manager again.

The file was there, and had a long set of numbers in it. I deleted it and recreated it with nothing but a carriage return in it. I launched BOINC Manager again, and the same message comes up.

Did you once again tried the "File" "select computer" and entering "local host"?

Normally after that the attach wizard should start, even with the "connecting to localhost" at the bottom right of the manager.

Yes, after opening the Boinc Manager, the 'Connection Failed' popup came up, and I closed that. Then I went to File/Select Computer... and entered localhost (from the drop down) and the same message popped up again, 'Connection Failed'.

I also tried 'local host'. That also did not work.

Imagine how frustrating this is trying this for over a week kinda like this, trying one thing after another, with nothing working. I do appreciate your assistance though. I don't want to give up on the project if I don't have to.

Have you tried a hard boot? Shut down, not restart, also disable firewall just long enough to test it. Also, disable the windows xp SP2 built in firewall. Upgrade to version 5.2.13 and stick with the new version.

Hmmm. what else??

Do you have a program like "childwatch" or other net monitoring software? Have you run "Spybot-search and destroy" How about Adaware?

only allow outgoing on 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS)
DON'T open 1043 or 31416 on a router as this may allow someone on the internet to control your client
most "all in one" modem/router boxes automatically allow normal outgoing comms, so this shouldn't be a problem at a all

the 443 port (HTTPS) is only needed when using a secure server with a url as such (httpS://server.domain.com/url/) with regular http it only uses 80, but again, your router should deal with this automatically

so bob, don't change anything just yet, your router will only affect comms with the project servers, not the manager with the client
