I would go for an AMD XP some where around 2500-2700 boxed w/fan. Although I have heard that the Duron is just about as fast and overclocks well. The XP has a faster front side bus and a larger cache

Thats what i think as well, although the duron 1800 and 2400Xp
run a wu in nearly identical times. (the duron is slightly faster)
the credit given is way different...
i also have a P3 1000 and P3 1200 that have credits strangely alike although
there is a speed difference.

just thinking a farm made of amd material is more economical.

I would suggest the AMD Athlon XP as well, and would go with the barton chipset, since it seems to run cooler which makes overclocking easier(if thats your thing).

AMD is cutting the price, so wait 2-4 week, you will got more for the money

my personal thinking:

one of the "best" cheap cpus, also mentioned above, is the barton

on example ist the AMD p2500 with 512 kb of cache

without special cooling, you can run the amd p2500 as an amd p2800

this will give you a lot of cpu power for the money

Motherboards:
use a "qualitiy" MB, not a cheap one. A cheap motherborad, has less possibilies for oclocking AND there are mostly not as stable as quality boards.

I do have bad experience with boards with build in grafic cards, those which I used, gave bad performance (got 3 in the past, all of them broken)

Memory
take fast memory, slow memory decreases the system overall performance

compare the prices, this can also save money

With luck and spending time, at ebay, can also be a source of good and cheap hardware

good luck if finding "your" best CPU.

If i was you i would get the money i wanted to spend and then look for the best CPU in that linit on Ebay, as long as the person selling it has atlest 98% possitive feedback it should be alright. And they do go cheap!

That's good to know about the price cut. Where did (do) you find out about that? I've kind of been wanting to upgrade to at least a 3000+ (I think that's the limit of my motherboard -- at least the upper limit on the website) so maybe that will be the time. Incidently though. you can overclock a 2400+ to 2800+ without special cooling as well. I think mine runs with a 13.5 multiplier and a 162 FSB with some slight overvolting and air cooling (case partly open).

I've also had problems with my graphics card, but not terrible. It's a PNY GeForce4 Ti4600 and works great. I'm on my third one of those because the first two got screwed up somehow and didn't work properly. But, that's where the lifetime warranty came in handy. :)

What about the new Centrino with 2MB of L2 cache....
that'd be fast wouldn't it?
