I downloaded Boinc some months back and can't tell if it's working or not. I don't like the idea of uninstalling it if it might be working and I don't know it. Can anyone tell me an easy to tell if the Boinc installation is doing anything? Thanks. |

Can anyone tell me an easy to tell if the Boinc installation is doing anything? Thanks. It looks like you did it correctly. You have 99 seti/BOINC credits and most of your seti classic wu's are credited, with the rest to come when classic closes. Are you having some kind of problem? |

Maybe you should consider to download the newest version, because there has been several, or one should say many, new releases of the recommended version during the past months? Happy crunching! :-) "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

Under the work tab it does show you progress %. But I did check your computer that is listed, and you do only have two results done since 6-26-05, which means something has not been working the way it should. Then again your last contact date is of today. IAS - Where Space Is Golden! |

Where it shows updates, it says the last update was back in May, which I don't understand. But I'm still running the old Seti@home software. Could that have anything to do with it? As you can see, I'm trying to avoid reinstalling if possible. As I recall, it was pretty confusing the first time around. |

As you can see, I'm trying to avoid reinstalling if possible. As I recall, it was pretty confusing the first time around. What system do you have? As you can see here on the Download BOINC client software site, there's the recommended versions to all systems. To Windows it changes very rapidly these days, I can see I'm already one version behind. But, Sheilla, if you're running BOINC 4.4* or something, you don't have to worry about anything, because the installation will only replace your current client. If you have the 4.19 client, you'll have to uninstall that before you can install the newer version. But your WU's will be safe no matter what! The problems with older versions of your client might be, that it's suddenly not compatible with the server software, so in time your WU's can be invalid and with this granted 0 credit because of this. I read somewhere, that they have talked about refusing to accept reported WU's from 4.19, because it makes too many faults. So an upgrade to 5.* may be in place. It looked like I was running 4.2 or 4.2something. So I just installed 5.2.13. I supposed I need to wait and see if anything happens? I have never seen a Boinc screensaver but the old-style Seti@home screensaver shows that the old program is still working. I know that will be discontinued in December, though. |

Hi Sheila, the seti classic program runs at a higher cpu priority than boinc and won't allow it to do much work. If everything is working OK with boinc you might want to stop running seti classic. I just looked at my settings, though, and found that the BOINC screensaver was now selected so I set the timing to wait 1 minute and the BOINC screensaver did come up. At least, I *think* that's what it was. |

I believe some people think that Seti is still running after they exit the Boinc manager (i.e. right mouse click on the tray icon and then exit). The manager shuts down the whole thing if you exit it from the tray in single user installs. I see the reason now why your last contact date is so new is because you updated Boinc. Hans and Misfit are also correct. IAS - Where Space Is Golden! |

Hans and Misfit are also correct.[/quote Yes, I believe I tried to do some sort of update first, to see if it would do anything, then later I reinstalled BOINC. That was the first time I'd gotten back to trying to make it work in several months. Last night, after Seti Classic finished a WU, I right clicked on the tray icon (the old green one) and exited and then the new BOINC version did seem to run faster. So this morning I've done the same thing again but didn't succeed in finding a way to take the old Seti Classic off my Start program so I'm wondering if I will have to do this every time I boot up? Also, I found that, with the Classic, the program ran faster if I selected NONE for the screen saver and let it run in the background all the time. Is the BOINC version similar in that way? I've already set a preference for it to run all the time, but not sure about the screen saver. Sheilla |

While I'm thinking of it, another thing I'm wondering about is that under my account info in the BOINC manager, it only shows the total number of classic WUs and classic CPU time as of March 15, 2005, whereas I have been running a much faster computer than I had before and have actually done a good number of WUs since then. Is everyone's account only listing Classic WUs through 3/15, or is it because I didn't have BOINC working properly? It's not really important as long as the finished WUs were getting through as they should. Sheilla |

Yes, I believe I tried to do some sort of update first, to see if it would do anything, then later I reinstalled BOINC. That was the first time I'd gotten back to trying to make it work in several months. It seems that both programs are trying to run at the same time. If you are using the graphical screen saver version of classic you should be able to uninstall it from your control pannel, add/remove programs. I have not used it myself in a long time so I can't remember if that is the case. Also, I found that, with the Classic, the program ran faster if I selected NONE for the screen saver and let it run in the background all the time. Is the BOINC version similar in that way? I've already set a preference for it to run all the time, but not sure about the screen saver. You are correct, Seti in Boinc will run faster with out graphics. I de-select to run with out it. I am still using 4.45 on most of my machines and have not updated to the latest version, so I have not seen some of their upgrades they have done. I think I am going to wait til some of the bugs are worked out, before I do a newer version myself. They seem to produce a version a day lately. Mike IAS - Where Space Is Golden! |

Sheilla, yes, when you use the screensaver, it takes away ressources from crunching the WU. I, myself, has set my screensaver to none, and if I'd like to watch the graphics of the current WU, I'll click on the running WU and then click on the Show graphics button in my BOINC manager. I run 3 projects, so I can see the graphics of each. Rosetta@Home, which is one of my projects, have just developed a graphic, so they're sending some out. It looks like this: Click the pic! Sheilla, yes, when you use the screensaver, it takes away ressources from crunching the WU. This one looks interesting. I'm tempted to attach to Rosetta just to have a look at the proteins they're folding :o) Regards Hans |

Yes, it's cool! They have finished testing the graphics, so all WU's have graphics now. But the recommended client is 5.*, as the earlier clients caused some problems. The dev's over there are very nice, and they participate actively on the boards, explaining and answering questions. They are very amendable to people's advise and criticism. The graphics are explained here. And it's funny to see how the proteine is jiggling trying to fold the best way, and you can follow the energy and the "RMSD" in the graphs.
