Just wanted to pass on info about my experience with installing BOINC... It totally sucked! I understand the need to move forward with newer and better ideas. But, why couldn't this process include better install info. Everyone likes to presume its the firewall. and, in most cases, it probably was. But, like me, it wasn't. It was poor instructions in how to attach to the SETI project. I wasted a lot of time because of that proxy dialog popping up. something should've been mentioned about this. It popped up because BOINC couldn't log me in on the server. That's another thing... I was left to assume what server to use. Hey... I have an idea... Why not add a readme.txt file with the appropriate instructions to attach to SETI. A lot of folks will say, hey, go to themessage boards for answers... Guess what? Not everybody thinks that thats what one must do to find installing info! My target for SETI was 50,000 work units. I'm at 49k+. I no longer have any idea how work units I've completed. As soon as all of my work units which have been downloaded have been completed, I'll be back down to one dual processor computer using BOINC. I have quite a few systems running multiple commandline SETI@home. It had taken me a short while to figure out what to use to download/upload work units, etc.... Looks like I'll have to start over. I do have one question to SETI@home.... Where is the step by step instructions in attaching to the SETI project using BOINC? Your project is benefiting form our systems... I know this and I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I sort of like the idea of helping out and being associated with the program. Why can't you guys at least test installing BOINC and attaching to SETI from test systems using folks of average intelligence and not those that are technically capable? Had you used the assistance of a computer novice in the testing, you would have learned that nobody really knows the ins and outs of attaching to SETI using BOINC. I resolved my problems by logging into my SETI account in IEv6; Making sure I attached to the localhost on BOINC; then adding my email address and password to BOINC. (NOTE: I had to reset my password to ensure I had a working password.) If BOINC requires a password, then by all means, automatically email that info to your SETI members! I had to dig for an old email (several years old) to get mine! And, I know most everyone wouldn't have a 2 year old email around (Yet alone be able to find it)! Well those were my issues and it took me over an hour to attach. It should've taken only 10 minutes, which would include installing BOINC. ciao... |

Where is the step by step instructions in attaching to the SETI project using BOINC? Try this place, and also here. There's a lot of good information there. |

There's a lot more of us around (list not updated yet). Might be wise you checked up on some information before you spouted (the wrong) disinformation. Might be wise to try to learn something about BOINC, so you know one of your questions will never happen: You start from zero credits in Seti/Boinc. Read this FAQ in the Wiki on that. The credits in Classic aren't compatible with the credits in Boinc. So the old ones won't be added to the new ones, ever. Bookmark that WIKI and start reading it. Bookmark the BOINC site and start reading it. |

Just wanted to pass on info about my experience with installing BOINC... It totally sucked! Hi Arnold, when setting up your other hosts, just install boinc, then copy over this file from your first host: account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml and you're done. Should only take 5 minutes :o) Regards Hans |

.... I don't know.... When I started here, I knew no more about BOINC than you do. And yet, I had no problem activating my account [since I previously crunched Classic], downloading and installing the appropriate BOINC software and then attaching to SETI@Home II. The instructions may be short and sweet, but they ARE to the point. Others here have given you leads on where to get the information you need. I won't re-hash what they have proposed. I sincerely hope you can get your problem[s] thraightened out and happily BOINC with the rest of us.... (-:< >:-) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L.
