My system crashed due to a power supply problem. After geetting the system back up, I tried to run boinc. I get the "Another copy of BOINC is already running" message.

I have no lockfile.
There is no other copy running on my machine!

If you're sure you have no lockfile, look for a defunct instance in the running processes. Type ps -e at a prompt and look through the list for any instance of boinc or setiathome, and if you find one just end it with a kill command.
