This BOINC is a complete shambles. This programme seems to ignore any personal settings that I give it. I do not want it to run when I'm busy on my computer, yet it still churns away (running my CPU up to 100%) happily ignoring the instruction, it also keeps defaulting to 100Gb disc space when I have set it to 1Gb. I simply cannot tolerate this. I've been with SETI for a while but until they get this joke of a programme sorted out I'm seriously going to have to consider leaving it others to run this inferior junk on their computers.

Cool, another one.

Bye.

Also, since your probably not *really* leaving, but think the threat of your leaving will somehow change things and you'll probably stick around: Make sure that the settings group (home, work, etc) is the same as the computer you're having the problems with. Meaning, if you are changing the "work" settings, make sure your computers are attatched to the "work" settings.

Of course I won't be leaving. I'm just at the point of total frustration one gets to when things don't go the way they should. Instead of putting an axe through the computer I thought it best to throw all my toys out of the pram here instead. I'll have to look at my settings, yet again, to see why BOINC thinks it can run all the time when I've told it not to. I do not wish it to run my CPU constantly at 100% if I do not want it to.

On my G5 dual Mac, Seti runs both processors at or near 100% until I open and use any other programs. Seti then seems to go into the background and give up processor time. I haven't seen any slowdown in using my computer for work with Seti running continuously. Charlie

Aside from my previous idea, make sure that your Boinc connects to the Seti server to get the new settings. Remember, that's how you do it: change settings on the site, and then the settings transfer to Boinc when you connect/update.

If you are trying to set boinc to suspend when you use the computer AND you have set up multiple profiles (i.e. home & work), this is a known bug in the software.

In order to suspend when you use the computer, you have to have that set in your default general preferences and you have to delete the profiles for any location specific preferences (which of course means all computers have to use the same default settings).

I've not seen any info on when they expect to have this resolved.

I'll see if it works. I have tried it before and it didn't seem to solve the problem. I'm going to do a clean re-install of the software after Cyberscrubbing the 1st download into oblivion first.

I'm going to start again from scratch and that should sort it all out I presume.
Thanks for the advice.

Richard, how may workunits have you got to process? - it seems that BOINC will only connect to the SETI servers to send and get data (and any setting changes you have submitted) when it has completed them all (or close to completing them all). Well that is what it seems to be doing on my machine anyway - I have settings to keep between 0.1 and 5 days worth so at the moment there are about 10 workunits being processed on my machine in sequence.

so when was the last time you had workunits downloaded? - and have you only submitted changes since then?

When I submitted my changes to only run work when the PC has been idle for 10 minutes (as is what you desire?), those settings transferred fine when the next contact was made to the SETI servers and more workunits were downloaded.

Even if you have settings for 100Gb disk space you will never use that much unless you have settings to keep several years worth of workunits on disk!!! Once workunits have been completed and results sent the disk space used by them are released?? disk usage on my system for BOINC seems to always be under 10Mb! And the setting to only use a max of 50% of free space is there anyway.

You can always continue to run SETI classic for a few more months until it is closed and then transfer to BOINC where it should be settled in nicely then?!?

I don't find BOINC a load of junk - works fine for me.

Just my view of course

Martyn

After starting from scratch again all's running now as it should be. Seti is now running as I want it to, only when I'm not using the computer, and disc space is now at 1Gb. Thanks for all the help people.

Well, my G5 works with SETI Classic well. And I have never seen a problem either.

And I usually have iTunes playing in the background, usually several data move in progress while I edit and run test scripts on my web pages.

I never saw any problems on my PCs either. With classic or BOINC. And I play games on one of them and have never been able to detect any problems.
