Hi there,

I installed BOINC 3.20 recently. Eversince my pc does not use both (Athlon MP 2400+) processors anymore, only one.

As far as I can tell al my preferences are correct. I even tried uninstalling it (delete all files) and re-installing it, but to no effect.

I hope someone can help me with this, new WU's coming out soon and I want to be ready to crunch! :)

Double-check the General Preferences: one item says:
"On multi-processors, use at most: x processors".

If you want to use two processors, change that to a "2". Then do an "Update" for the project to get the change onto your computer. It DOES work; I've got two work units running on this dual-cpu system here. I don't know if it will run two on a single-CPU with Hyperthreading, though.

If you've already done that, I apologize. I was just making sure. :)

Hmm, you aren't trying to run the BOINC GUI twice, are you? You don't need to do that! Run BOINC once and it will run two copies of the SETI client if things are setup right and you have two CPUs. (But then, I'm only running 3.19, so maybe 3.20 broke it.)

I triple checked my GP, it says use 2 ( 81394 for the non believers ;) ).
And infact it did work when I used version 3.19 or earlier (hey, there's a thought?), it just stopped when I switched to 3.20.

The thing that amazes me is the fact that I do not hear anyone else complaining about it. Sureley more people would have noticed the problem if it occured on al multi processor machines?

And another litle thingy: when I do a benchmark it does use both processors. So then the problem would be with the SETI client (3.08) itself and not with the BOINC framework, correct?

Pff, I need some sleep I am starting to brabble :P

Both of my dual boxes are running 3.20 and both are using both processors. One is running WinXP Pro and the other is running Xandros Linux Ver.2.0.

A couple of thoughts. Check globalprefs.xml see what it has stored there for the number of CPUs to use. Is there an idle WU in your queue that could be crunched? If not, check the logs to see if BOINC is trying to get more work, it should say something about a CPU with no work, and request 1 second of work.

Mecallie,

BOINC should use both of your processors provided you have minumum 2 WU's to process (1 WU per processor). If you only have 1 WU, then only 1 CPU will be used while the other sits idle waiting for it's own WU to process.

Just for the record: I am running ver 3.20 on a Hyperthreaded CPU and XP home. The client processes two WU's at a time.

Thanks for the replies all!

I cannot find a file called globalprefs.xml. BOINC does state: No general preferences found, using BOINC defaults.

I did find something about it in init_data.xml it states: 50 so I am guessing this is for the graphics? (Not running those) And in all files I found referring to my CPU's it clearly states 2. Even BOINC itself is telling my I have 2 CPU's, it is just not using them.

Are there some kind of different settings I need to set for SETI@Home when you first used the BOINC Betatest (with Astropulse) ?

Sorry, a slight typo. c:\Program files\BOINC\global_prefs.xml.

Doesn't matter, I do not think that one was there either.
What I did: go to the General Preferences tab and set max. cpu to 4. And under the seperate preferences I just changed the max. amount of disk space, just to let it parse.

After that I hit the update button in BOINC and voilá: it started another WU, using both processors now :)

It seems that even though it stated that 2 cpu's should be used you still have to refresh the info. Probably some kind of DB bug or something, I can't think of any other reason why it stopped using 1 processor all of a sudden...

Anyway: it works now.

Thanks for the hints everyone!
