Any linux gurus around? Having finally got a working hardware combination (ancient but servicable), I've installed Fedora core 2 on a box that I'm attempting to make a print server for macs and windoze out of, I've finally got linux running after a very long battle with different distros, and am currently waiting on the HP laserjet 3500 driver to make, etc.

But, while I'm waiting, I wonder if anyone can tell me, how does one reconfigure the xserver (K.I.S.S. please), after changing graphics cards, coz, I'd like to change to using the mobo's own onboard graphics.

I have actually tried just swapping the connection lead to the onboard port, and removing the addon VGA, but, all that resulted was the x server not starting and a lovely black command prompt, most, if not, all my googling has revealed so far, is huge quantities of appears greek to me :-(

Please be kind with a struggling windows refugee :-)

Cheers in advance,
Ken P.

One would hope when you installed Fedora you install the System Admin tools.

If you did, and have installed Gnome. Applications->System Tools->KickStart

I'd rather speak my mind because it hurts too much to bite my tongue.

A man can never have enough admin tools :-)

Cheers, I've just looked there, looked at the display bit, and lo!, an X server whatchamacallit, presumably I just put the tick in 'configure xserver' box, change the settings to what the display will be on the next reboot, accept/ok stuff, and hope for the best?

If it all goes tits up, is there any to cause an auto detect for the onboard VGA, or do something similar from the command line? To borrow someone elses (scarecrow?) by line, sussing out this here linux is harder than herding cats.

I thought that that cudzu? thingie would jump in and save me before, but alas, it didn't.

Thanks,

Kudzu!!

It got it's name from the invasion of the plant with the same name in the South. Some smartass decided that it would make great erosion control, so it was imported from Japan. That same smartass didn't count on the lack of critters willing to eat it..

Kudzu only pops up if a device has not already been discovered..

I did have a look at that kickstart panel, and made some changes, but couldn't find any easy/simple way to save or otherwise implement them, so, I had another bumble around all the menus etc., and found system settings, display; so I put the required settings in there, for type, colour depth, resolution, etc., and miracle of miracles on next reboot/logon it only worked, marvellous, I've managed to remove my test graphics card!

And just to torture it's poor little underpowered cpu even more, it's crunching seti@home as well for now, I couldn't resist - Oh! The Humanity!

Thanks for the pointers.

For some reason, I can't rename this thread, has that function been disabled, along with the introduction of extra 'reporting' facility?

Post a reply to the Thread and not this message. You'll be able to change the title

When I post a reply to the thread - instead of the fields I'd expect to see, the thread title, and the actual reply; I see only one, the reply field, there appears to be no option to rename the thread, unless I'm blind, stupid, or both :-)

edit
AH! I see, you post a reply to the thread, then edit the reply.
