Berkeley people can self-congratulate as much as they like. At the end of the day the customer is always right. We the customers (20,000 BOINC users minus the few Berkeley cheerleaders) are NOT happy. Hydnum Repandum </br> Open SETI Initiative |

Well I am not a customer. Nor do I share his sentiments. Nor does he speak for me. So there are three reasons right there why I shouldn't be included in that number either. 19,997 > > Opps make that 19,999 that are unhappy cause you do not speak for me.... > > 19,998; he has not been commissioned by me as my representive either. > > |

Most of the developers posted regurally on the boards before the beta expanded and it started to seem like there were more whinners and complainers than people trying to help make things better. Now it seems that Rom is the only one that still has enough patience to bother sorting through all the trash to answer the questions that deserve an answer. 19,995 (And I would be willing to bet that number would go down to double digits if all the silent majority bothered to respond to this crap) John Keck BOINCing since 2002/12/08 |

4 days no work, over 100 work units lost in the transition from SETI to BOINC, just the type of thing make you feel irritated. I joined this project to give my PC something to occupy its under-utilised processor and got a buzz from seeing my WU's increase and from downloading my certificates especially my 500 hundred one which put me in the top 8% of Seti participants. I thought that was a positive achievement from a non-team member of the society. And, Society it was, now the performance of the servers has converted that Society into a bickering and frustrated bunch of associates who refer to each other as Buffons (Sic): (from another thread). Do something and do it quickly because I for one (of the 19997) am finding it increasingly difficult to keep appreciating the efforts of the Boinc team in trying to make this very unreliable project work. This may well be a project of enormous proportion but it seems to me it just wasn't ready to be launched. |

An experiment within an experiment. System = Win Xp Home. Running seti@home [ seti Classic? ] as a service. Running seti2 boinc_gui as cli. As I am getting the "no work units" and "no schedulers responding" messages, and I did get one WU for seti2, I restarted seti1 and have kept seti2 running. Seti1 is getting ~99% of the cpu, and seti2 is grabbing 2% every few minutes. It looks like that seti2 will finish the computation before the report deadline, and if it doesn't, I can pause seti1 to let the seti2 WU complete. Then, IF the seti2 data servers get caught up, I can kill the seti1 service, and let seti2 have the machine all to itself. I am doing this on 3 of my computers, and running seti1 on the other 5. :-) Claude [ crunching since May 1999 ] |

It really would be nice if they(the seti team)would post more news on the homepage about what is going on. Then we would not have to speculate about what is happenning. I don't mind being patient as long as I know why!!! My operat~1 system unders~1 long filena~1 , does yours? |

I registered with SETI@home on May 18, 1999, so I have been crunching numbers on this project for 5.183 years. I have returned 13,748 work units, and stand at the 99.744 %-ile. I have been around for a while, and can tell you that there were a few problems back at the beginning, and along the way, just as now. I am sure that this, too, shall pass. It would be nice, in the meantime, to have more frequent updates and more specific details about expected resolution of problems posted to the BOINC home page. The latest current entry in the "News" section reads: "July 21, 2004 The log files are currently being compressed, after thats done the project should return to normal." Surely anyone would admit that is a bit ambiguous and that it is time to update the "News" (or change the heading to "Olds"). At least a "best-guess" as to how long it might be before work will be available would be greatly appreciated. I have five modems trying to connect every few minutes. The handshaking is about to drive me nuts. Wouldn't it be possible for someone, every couple of hours while there is an ongoing problem, to post just a one or two sentence update on the home page? And, then, a one sentence notice that things are back to normal when the problem is resolved. That way, I could pull the plug on my modems for the duration, reduce the noise level at my house, and perhaps reduce the load on the SETI/BOINC servers, without having to lose too much processing time. That said, as I understand it, we are all volunteers. On both ends. It is my understanding that the folks at the Berkeley end are either straight volunteers, or they have taken on the added responsibilities and duties of handling the SETI@home project, in addition to their other responsibilities and duties. I doubt that any additional pay is given to most of those folks. That would make them volunteers in my book. A little patience is called for, and name-calling and insults are certainly not appropriate. In the meantime, I too, am running Classic while waiting for BOINC units to become available. I never uninstalled Classic. I just exit Classic when BOINC units are available for processing and open it up again when they are not. |
