After 4.559 years and 5613 results sent to Seti@Home"Classic" only to have that go south on me, and using BOINC for a few days and getting squat for work (if the server responds at all), I think it may be time to turn off my computers.

BOINC sucks and I have lost interest with the whole thing.

I don't know whats going on here. No work - OK! Why are some people so painfull? Will you get money for your crunched WUs? No! Will others get money if they will crunch more WUs then you? No! Will others take over you in the rank list? No, because there no WUs at all! There are so much other things YOU can do then only looking around the Message Tab in BOINC! For example - do your primary work, backup your Systems, install Updates (and backup again), play with your childrens, read a Book or (my favourite) read all the Docs you can get about BOINC, S@H and P@H. After that you will be able to give Support to all the People who will convert to BOINC in the Future. This should free up the time for the Dev Team to fix current and further problems on BOINC.

Therefore - BE PATIENT, enjoy the live and wait...

Whats wrong with just running Seti Classic until you can get work from BOINC, thats what I'm doing with my PC's, I run whatever I can get from the BOINC Projects & when I run out of work from there I just start up Seti Classic again.

There is going to be a final Snapshot of Seti Classic when they turn it off for good so you will get credited for any you run even if it doesn't show up now ...

@ guido waldenmeier

There is no problem with the software. Either the server is overloaded or there are no wu's... it's a problem with berkeley's infrastructure and can't be solved with 100 beta testers...

@skep

---(short en-version)--- :-)
As already mentionend before:
The biggest part of berkeleys seti-infrastructure is still up for Seti Classic, only a small part is up for Seti/Boinc..that explains the difference.

I too find it frustrating. No, it's not about getting paid or not. I built my small farm of PCs just to do this project; my way of contributing. Yes, I revert to Classic when there's no work. Doesn't make it one tiny bit less frustrating. Yes, it will get better, but most of the problems seem to be linked to demand. When you do something like this, you surely have to judge what the demand is likely to be, and for BOINC SETI@Home, that's 5 million, so you have to pitch for that, no matter what your resources may be. That has not been done: the demand has not and will not yet reach that level, and still no work, or even no project. I say again, no matter everyone saying chill out, it'll get better. It does not make it any less frustrating, and although I will not give up on it, it's no problem to understand that many will do just that.
Regards,
Dennis

@skep

Most of our technical effort over the past year has been focused on ramping up SETI@home II, which involves an entirely new client/server architecture we are developing called BOINC. BOINC has been in alpha/beta test for a while now, and we're hoping to release an early version soon. The bottom line is we are currently running two SETI@home-sized projects on the same amount of hardware that up until recently ran just one project. This is difficult to say the least, but BOINC's flexible server architecture and several recent hardware donations from our major sponsors are making for a smoother transition.
Techinal News May 4 2004

Finite work supply
Each work unit is now processed a limited number of times (typically three). When we have no work for your computer, you'll get a 'no work available' message. We encourage you to participate in other BOINC-based projects; then, when SETI@home has no work, your computer can stay busy doing other scientific research.

Finite Work Supply

SETI@home's transition to BOINC

We have released a new version of SETI@home based on BOINC, a general-purpose platform for distributed computing projects. We encourage you to switch to the new SETI@home. If you have problems with the new version, you can uninstall it and reinstall the old 'Classic' version of SETI@home. The schedule is:
On 14 May 2004 we made a 'snapshot' of SETI@home Classic user information (accounts, teams, profiles) and used it to initialize the new SETI@home database.
On June 22 2004 we made SETI@home/BOINC available for general use. There will be a 'transition period' during which you can run either SETI@home Classic or SETI@home/BOINC. During this transition period, SETI@home Classic accounts and team changes can be made, but they will not be carried over.
Once SETI@home/BOINC is running smoothly and versions are available for most platforms, we will turn off the data server for SETI@home Classic. At this point you will need to switch to SETI@home/BOINC.

Ok, so I got frustrated. I have been doing this for a few years and then for a week I keep getting errors from SetiatHome. Everything from Fatal Error -1 to Unknown Error -100.
-
Then I D/L BOINC figuring to get a jump on what is to be, and every time I connect to the server, no work or no server responding. What the Hell.
-
Why do I do this project? I was one of the first members of the Planetary Society back in the early 1970's and the (Seti) project sounded like fun. I get a kick out of watching my WU numbers climb and my percent rise up over 99. That is what I got out of it....a little competition.
-
IRT Heffed, bite me.
-
IRT punky, you mean you are not getting paid by the WU? I guess I got in just in time for the payoff...lol
-
BTW, I uninstalled and reinstalled everything, and now I am running both Classic and BOINC on my computers at the same time. Who said it could not be done?

No thanks. You said BOINC sucked and were leaving. I said bye. Where's the problem in that?

Nobody said it couldn't be done. Simply that it will take longer to get anything done on either project. :)

Sorry I misunderstood. You can be sure when I said bite me, it was with the same intent and goodwill.

I see that both projects are running much slower now. I will need to run one at a time for sure. Decisions, decisions....

Stop whoring for attention. You bitch about Boinc and say you're going to leave. Bye. Leave already.
