April 18, 2007 This infrared image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope shows the Rosette nebula, a pretty star-forming region more than 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Monoceros. In optical light, the nebula looks like a rosebud, or the "rosette" adornments that date back to antiquity. Edge of the Orion Nebula. High Resolution NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured this "true color" mosaic of a small portion of the Orion Nebula, taken the Wide Field and Planetary Camera in wide field mode. The image shows a wealth of detail never seen before in the nebula. Newly discovered features include elongated objects oriented on the brightest stars in this region, rapidly expanding plumes of material around young stars and protoplanetary disks. The STEREO Spacecraft: The Sun in 3-D NASA's Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) satellites have provided the first three-dimensional images of the sun. For the first time, scientists are able to see structures in the sun's atmosphere in three dimensions. This new view will greatly aid scientists' ability to understand solar physics and there by improve space weather forecasting. NASA's Mars Rover Finds Evidence of Ancient Volcanic Explosion Layers at Home Plate: NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit has discovered evidence of an ancient volcanic explosion at "Home Plate," a plateau of layered bedrock approximately 2 meters (6 feet) high within the "Inner Basin" of Columbia Hills, at the rover's landing site in Gusev Crater. This is the first explosive volcanic deposit identified with a high degree of confidence by Spirit or its twin, Opportunity. There is strong evidence that those layers are from a volcanic explosion, said Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. Squyres is principal investigator for the rovers' science instruments. The findings about volcanic activity are reported in a paper published in the May 4 issue of the journal Science. Reflecting Merope In the famous Pleiades star cluster, a star's light slowly destroys a passing cloud of gas and dust. The star, Merope, lies just off the upper right edge of this image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The cloud, known as IC 349, and the star have been in existence for millions of years. In the past 100,000 years, however, part of the cloud has by chance moved so close to the star - only 3,500 times the Earth-Sun distance - that the star's light affects the cloud's dust in an unusual manner. Pressure of the star's light significantly repels the dust in the reflection nebula with smaller dust particles being repelled more strongly. Eventually parts of the dust cloud have become stratified and point toward Merope, with the closest particles being the most massive and so the least affected by the radiation pressure. A longer term result is the general destruction of the dust by the energetic starlight. Congratulations to Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute and colleagues who predicted this morning's Aurigid meteor shower. It materialized right on time in a sharp peak shortly before 1130 UT or 4:30 am PDT, Saturday, Sept. 1st. |

Comet tail blown off by coronal mass ejection The picture of the day site had a neat little page with a link to a 4MB movie showing a comet encountering an ejection from the sun which separates the tail from the comet. |

Pic of the day Comet 17P/Holmes sky map .gif showing where comet is I just gazed at the comet with binoculars. It looks like a fuzzy ball just like the Picture of the day site picture. The full moon is also pretty impressive since the moon is at it closest to the Earth now. relative size of the moon at apogee and perigee |
