You forgot to mention all the free spam you can handle... You don't have to subscribe to the list, which is opt in. Their privacy policy states they don't pass on your address. P.S. I've donwloaded DivX before at no cost and without giving anyone my addy. Unless you got it illegally from P2P, all you've been able to download for free is simply the codec that allows WMP to play DivX files. |

You forgot to mention all the free spam you can handle... If you think privacy policies will protect you, think again. Some companies have SOLD there lists when in financial straits despite what their policy states or what rouge employees will do. Downloading P2P files is just as bad or worse than giving out personal info, that's after the worms and trojans finish making a complete mess. But I've got some beach front property out here in the desert I'll sell you cheap. Oh, the codec works just fine, thank you. Oh, and one other thing, be sure to sign up for Pepsi points for free stuff. Account frozen... |

Ah, the advantages of having your own mail server. The email address I used to get the serial number and info was removed 60 seconds after I received the info. One of those free yahoo mail accounts makes a pretty good spam sponge too. :) |

I would also recommend washing the DL file through a AVP with current .dat and scanning for malware as well. Account frozen... |

...... Do you suffer paranioa? ;-) Well I bought the DivXPro at Version 5.1 and used one special E-Mail address for it. Since now I did not receive one spam mail to this e-mail address. Only update information and advertises from DivX.com itself. I have my AV and anti-spy-ware up to date all the time and at no time malware was in the software I downloaded from Divx.com. But you're right, you should scan all files you download from the internet. Andy Want to know your pending credit? The biggest bug is sitting 10 inch in front of the screen. |

Paranoid, nope, just seen too many people biten, bitte. As an example, I was doing some research the other day, got linked to a web page that someone hijacked, and 8, count them 8 Trojans tried to install themselves into my computer within a second (which Kaspersky caught and annilated) . It's a jungle out there. I don't go waltzing into every offer, and avoid getting phished. However, if you want to download something, and while doing so take a walk on the wild side, perhaps you might consider http://www.digicrime.com. Do so at your own risk! You are responsible for any damages. P.S. That wasn't where I got hijacked to, BTW. Account frozen... |

If you think privacy policies will protect you, think again. Some companies No, I don't think that. Which is why I use Jetable.org However, I do think a reputable company isn't stupid enough to violate their privacy policy. |

If you think privacy policies will protect you, think again. Some companies [color=green]I would fill this whole thread up with examples of violations of Privacy Policies, but here are just a few examples... Popcorn Company Settles FTC Privacy Violation Charges "Jolly Time" Web Site Collected Information from Kids Without Parents' Consent American Pop Corn Company (APC) will pay $10,000 to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA Rule) by collecting personal information from children on its "Jolly Time" Web site without obtaining parental consent. The settlement also will bar future violations of the COPPA Rule. "This is the fifth law enforcement action the FTC has taken to enforce the COPPA Rule since it became effective in April, 2000" said J. Howard Beales III, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "The civil penalty of $10,000 reflects the relatively small number of violations in this case. But we hope it sends a strong message to operators of Web sites directed to children: We intend to enforce COPPA rigorously." The COPPA Rule applies to operators of commercial Web sites and online services directed to children under the age of 13, and to general audience Web sites and online services that knowingly collect personal information from children. Among other things, the Rule requires that Web sites get verifiable consent from a parent or guardian before they collect personal information from children. It also prohibits sites from conditioning a child's participation in an activity on the child's disclosing more personal information than is reasonably necessary to participate in such activity. In its complaint, the FTC alleges that APC maintains a Web site, www.jollytime.com, with a "Kids Club" section that features games, crafts, contests, and jokes directed to children under the age of 13. Without obtaining parental consent, the company collected personal information, including names, e-mail addresses, and home addresses, from children who went to the "Kids Club" section. It also conditioned participation in certain prize offers on children's providing more information than was necessary to participate in the activity, the FTC alleges. Both practices violate the COPPA Rule. In addition, APC posted a privacy policy statement on its Web site stating that it would notify parents or guardians by e-mail whenever "guests" under the age of 18 registered at its site. It stated that parents or guardians would be given the option to invalidate the registration. But APC did not contact the parents of children who registered and provided personal information, and therefore the privacy policy statements were false, in violation of the FTC Act, the agency alleges. The settlement bars APC from future violations of the COPPA Rule and from misrepresenting its policies about collecting, disclosing, or using children's personal information. It also calls for a civil penalty of $10,000. The Commission vote to accept the settlement was 5-0. The complaint and settlement were filed by the Department of Justice at the request of the FTC. They were filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, Western Division in Cedar Rapids, on February 13, 2002. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ JetBlue Airways gave five million customers' travel records to a US Department of Defense contractor. The authors' analysis reveals that JetBlue's privacy policy might pose additional significant threats to customer privacy and that the US Department of Homeland Security antiterrorism exercise has adversely affected personal privacy. DB, ehhh, I'm Fuzzy. And yes, I took a walk on the wild side, and spent most of my afternoon to check my computer with both my own McAfee virusprotection and an online viruscheck to be sure that this trojan I got, was removed properly! Forgive me if I'm being stupid (again) :) , but what is the main advantage of DivX over XviD? Is it ease of content creation? To my understanding, XviD _should_ display any DivX encoded file, and the DivX codec _should_ display any DivX3 compatible XviD file. Edit: Stuff |

Downloading P2P files is just as bad or worse than giving out personal info, that's after the worms and trojans finish making a complete mess. If you don't know what you're doing, maybe. But even with a rudimentary knowledge of the internet, p2p is really no big deal. Cordially, Rush elrushbo2@theobviousgmail.com Remove the obvious... |
