You can use the bottom form

" or if you've already created a SETI@home/BOINC account and want to link it to your SETI@home Classic account" of that same webpage.

If you don't know your Classic password anymore, you can use this form to have it extracted from the user_info.sah file that can be found inside the Seti@Home folder.

You need to know your Classic email. If you don't know, how could you crunch for Classic? You need this information for getting WUs and returning Results on every connection. You must have entered in SETI@home Classic and it should be saved there.

You must enter it in the field in the first part too. It identify the Classic account. I beleive with a password allone everyone can access randomly strange accounts. Classic password is not a long hash, only a small number. If no email is needed you may create one number and see which account you get with it.

I've had a couple of emails since I first started using Classic a few years ago, and I can't remember exactly what email I used or exactly what it was, since there doesn't appear to be a way to....

1: get my old email from Classic
2: transfer my old seti completed units without my old email

My old email should obviously be listed at in Classic somewhere as I've still been able to report and download new data, but I have no idea where to look.

I've downloaded BOINC twice and can't get it to work. I've attempted to link with the Account Manager and it can't do it. All the message said was that it failed to attach to Account Manager and there were no messages from the Server. I can't tell you how frustrated I am and I don't want to lose my seti. I am almost at 1,000 packets. I know someone else can't get it to work for them and they are very good with computers and software. Does anyone have a clue? There isn't a phone number to call for help.

The information is in user_info.sah in your classic folder, copy contents into the form that Thierry linked.

The email address is not in the user_info.sah file except for the first time you log into seti. It goes away the first time a result is submitted. Classic doesn't use the email address, it uses the account id that is in the user info file. The project people have bent over backwards trying to help people that didn't keep track of their account info but I don't know if there is anyway for them to give out forgotten email addresses. Account security for classic has been compromised now that they have come up with a method for retrieving an account's password using the user_info.sah file. If you know someones address you can get their classic password. However, from what I have been reading on the Classic boards, it is no longer possible to make changes to Classic accounts.

Janet,
Welcome to BOINC. This question is totally off topic to this thread that should not have been resurected in the first place. It would be much better to start a new thread with your problem.

Again, welcome to BOINC and please don't be put off by this post.

I have over 6000 workunits completed in classic SETI. Last May I downloaded the Boinc software but was unsuccessful installing it for some reason (don't remember what the problem was.) Now I have been successful and Boinc is running fine on my three computers. However the number of units Boinc shows is that number I had last May. Apparently when I tried installing it back then Boinc somehow saw my number of units and is remembering them. Since then I have used Classic and have several thousand more units.

How can I recapture my units? If I uninstall Boinc and re install, would it pick up the correct number?

Thanks.

If you look at the Classic stats on your BOINC account, you'll see that it clearly says: "SETI@home classic workunits as of 15 March 2005". This is because it's a database intensive process to bring over the stats. The databases are not dynamically connected. Some time after the Classic side closes, the stats will again be brought over to the BOINC side of the project, and those numbers updated. NO CREDIT HAS BEEN OR WILL BE LOST.

~~Yes, I know this is not part of the thread, but made you look!~~
Since there is not contact information, reading the same problems over and over in these threads are of no help. Everyone is in the dark with no shedding of light to illuminate the way. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

I am running the old classic system. I am attempting to load the new BOINC system but the account key I need has never been e-mailed to me. How can I get it? I have over 5000 units on the old account and do not want to lose credit for these.

How do you connect to this message board? Your BOINC account info show Classic credits and CPU time. This means you use your transfered account for posting here and to do this, you must have your account key. :)

If you used a password to login here, then you can use the password to attach to the project.

But in fact I believe you are only missing some Classic WUs. But if you look beside the WUs in your BOINC account info you see that this is as it was in march this year. There will be a update soon. And the WUs are only there as honor, the new credits (cobblestones) are so different that Berkeley don't want to mix them and so every one starts with 0 credits.

Not as much a specific answer as much as a suggestion: can the BOINC system managers post a sequence of step-by-step instructions in order to assist the host of willing participants to make a more smooth transition into the new system. I, too, am experiencing difficulty in logging into my account under the new BOINC system, perhaps related to giving the correct responses to set up the account. Instructions concerning the correct steps are vague and, I, for one, would appreciate the exra assistance to make the transition more smoothly. I hope that this will soon be a new link on the Home page before the December 15th shutdown deadline of the Classic SETI@Home system.

I was using that section, and it was still asking for an email address. I have my password

You need to know your Classic email. If you don't know, how could you crunch for Classic? You need this information for getting WUs and returning Results on every connection. You must have entered in SETI@home Classic and it should be saved there.

You must enter it in the field in the first part too. It identify the Classic account. I believe with a password alone everyone can access randomly strange accounts. Classic password is not a long hash, only a small number. If no email is needed you may create one number and see which account you get with it.

I entered my email address for my classic seti@home account (where I have 11750+/- WU) and filled the bottom section with the information supplied (and got me going in the first place). It then told me that my BOINC account key wasn't valid!!! - It doesn't seem to matter what I do. I may have registered with BOINC previously but didn't install the software until recently.

I also tried in the client software to link to my classic account, but it tells me that it failed to attach to the account manager. Nothing works. I have stayed with Seti@home for five years for the competition in Groups (Team Seti USA). Now that I have to start over I think I'll simply quit. What a bother!

Very frustrated,

What a joke! I noticed in the left column of the post I just made, that it recognized me as having joined on Oct 7, 2000, but still shows 0 for my credits! How's that for totally screwed up software?

I'll give this to the Dec 15 deadline set by Seti@home; if it isn't resolved by then, I'm gone!

Hello Aime Watts,

Please have a look under "Your account". You will see following:

Total credit 0.00
Recent average credit 0.00
SETI@home classic workunits
as of 15 March 2005 10,040
SETI@home classic CPU time
as of 15 March 2005 112,620 hours

The data for Seti Classic are as of 15 March 2005, date of the last sync between the server here and the data server of Seti Classic.

A final update of these data will be done once Classic has been shut down.

WU's from Classic are for nobody convertible to credits.

Credits will come up once you have returned a WU here.

See also the excellent explanation of credit of one of us, Paul D.Buck, given in his Boinc Wiki.

Message 204631 - Posted: 6 Dec 2005, 14:04:04 UTC - in response to Message 204581.

From: Richard Locke, Fort Lauderdale.

First:
When I try to run BOINC, I get the following error message:
"BOINC Manager unable to connect to BOINC client.
Would you like to try again?" I try again, but get same message.
It may be that your server is overloaded. Will keep trying.

This is a problem where Boinc Manager (the GUI) has started up, but the Boinc Daemon (boinc.exe) isn't running.

Shut down Boinc Manager (exit it).
Now Close down the PC.
Wait until it's completely closed down, then start it up again. If you have Boinc on auto startup, did this fix it?
Else check in Task Manager that boinc.exe is running before you try to start Boinc Manager.

Which version of Boinc are you using? We had some that had connection problems.
Try using 5.2.13 (latest from normal download link).

Second:
When I enter my E-Mailed code to link the new BOINC to my old account, I get the below error message. My old account comes up when I access "YOUR ACCOUNT." How do I get it to link?

Never EVER!! write your 32 character authenticator key in the forums!!
I'll go hunt down a moderator who will blank your posts, I have most of your post in quotes anyway.

The second part of the problem, all that missing text stuff is because Berkeley is having server problems. They are working on it.

Keep an eye on the front page news:
December 5, 2005
We are experiencing heavy traffic on our data server. This is preventing some result uploads/workunit downloads. We are working on the problem. More in Technical News.

See also Server Status.

Please try using this form to retrieve your Classic password. Then fill it in with the email address you used to make this account, in the middle option of this form.

That will put all Classic credits under your old name in your new account. Well, almost all of them. All up until the 15th of March 2005.

It was a snapshot made of the Seti Classic database on the 15th of March 2005. Seti/Boinc cannot update the Classic database in realtime, as the whole Classic database needs to be offline to make a snapshot. So the next and last update will be done once Classic shuts down.

You start from zero credits in Seti/Boinc. Read this FAQ in the Wiki on that. The credits in Classic aren't compatible with the credits in Boinc. So the old ones won't be added to the new ones, ever.

Ok I followed all the steps as far as finding the user_info.sah but am not sure how Im supposed to open it to get the information out to past into the data box. I ended up having to create a new account so I could log on here to ask. My classic user Id was Everl0st. I have neither my old password nor my old email account anymore. I was hoping to find my old password and transfer all those credits.
