Message 170448 - Posted: 21 Sep 2005, 20:32:50 UTC

Two days ago BOINC stopped receiving work units. The following are some of the messages received. I detached from the project and redid it with no change. It seems to be asking for ZERO work. Any help is appreciated. I want to get back to processing SETI work units.

Everything is fine with your BOINC.
It requests for 0 seconds of work, so there must be enough work in your cache for being crunched. How many WUs do you have in your queue?
The message Deferring communication with project for 10 minutes and 4 seconds should not irritate you since the scheduler states Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded.

Hi, I had a similar problem and I solved it with some help and a little lateral thinking by suspending my other project; climate prediction and started receiving work. This may help if you are participating in another project on BOINC. Here are the log messages from BOINC:

There have been NO work units for me to process since the last one was uploaded 2 or 3 days ago. It does not even check unless I use the update function. I'm going to try shutting down the other two projects for a while and see if that helps. Thanks for the help.

Not only did it help, all seems fine for now. I guess I would never had thought of that solution. Thanks for making me a happy person. I've been running Seti since it all began and hate losing time. Thanks again. BILL

I am being told BOINC 4.72 is downloading, but it has been three plus days, and the download isn't completed. I reset my project to try to fix the problem, even re-installed VIA the repair setting in the installer. Then Selected the update function. The program displays the following line in WORK: Project: SETI@home, Application: setiathome, Name: (The project name is a long set of characters. The Name is:28ja04aa.2967.1409.198574.223_1, CPU time: ---, Progress: 0.00%,To Completion: 20:04:02, Report Deadline: 10/27/2002 19:00:41PM, Status: Downloading. With this information showing that's still showing even now, and was the same showing when I opened the program 1.5 days ago when I started the program with only one difference the job name.
What's going on? This has happened several times now. Thank You For Your Time, and Assistnce. PLease note! This message is reffering to about the same problem, and I'm asking for someone from the BOINC support area to reply to both problems.

Requesting zero work means this;

A request for 0 second of work means one of three things:

The computer has too much work on hand already to meet deadlines reliably.

The project has enough work on hand, and the computer is not desperate for work.

The project has used too much CPU time for its resource share recently and is blocked from requesting more for a while.

In all of these cases, the best thing to do is to leave it alone, and it will fetch more work when it is ready.
"JM7"

Or this is happening;

4.45 had a bug where work that was completed and not reported yet (still in the list) was counted as in progress (and sometimes would prevent work download). If this occurs, force a report of the work in question, and the problem should be fixed.

This particular bug is supposed to be fixed in 4.72 and later.
And the beat goes on

If the job name is different, it's a different work unit. the earlier one was successful, and this one is trying to transfer.

If you check out this thread in the Number Crunching board, you'll see that there have been backlogs and problems in uploads and downloads since Wednesday afternoon, Berkeley time. The word from UCB is in a message posted a short time ago, and quoted here:

Yeah.. the upload/download server has been dropping connections since we came back on after the database backup outages yesterday. The servers are actually catching up but at an alarmingly slow rate. Obviously we hit a new bottleneck somewhere. Jeff's looking into it. I'm busy with a grant proposal (hence the lack of feedback lately).

For right now, the word is Patience. Once the server gets caught up and whatever problem on that end fixed, we can tell what part of your problem in on your computer, if any.

OK I understand the above messages, but please one thing still. I just detached from the job I was waiting for downloading to complete. Completely uninstalled BOINC 4.72. Re-installed from scratch. Ran program. I received the same basic information I noted in my earlier message for a job that is showing as in status: DOWNLOAD. The program is showing the Deferred Communication mesaage in the messages area. Is the deferred comunication also as effecting the download? Thank You For Your Time, and Assistnce.

As many things as you need to get going! But it would help us if you could do a copy and paste of the messages you're asking about, including a few lines before and after for the context. I think you're asking about the

kind of message, but I'm not certain. Seeing what comes before and after it would help interpret it.

Hi. The area where the message you are asking me to copy / paste will not allow me to copy the message, as it is not in the message area. In BOINC 4.72 in the Work tab is where the information is that you request, and the program doesn't allow me to copy. As stated before the line in the Work tab says (I will just enter the word NAME in the area that would be in the interface as the name of the work (Job in progress) therein referenced). The following is listed here as: column name / information in the column. Then each item separated by a comma. Here is the line as I have set the way to input the lines information as above: Project / SETI@home, Application / setiathome 4.18, Name / NAME, CPU time / ---, Progress / 0.00%, To completion / 17:53:32, Report Deadline / 10/27/2005 19:50:55:PM, Status / Downloading. That is what the line in the Work tab says. I go online, and it still isn't completing the downloading. In the Message tab are the following messages:
10/20/2005 01:25:57:AM||Starting BOINC client version 4.72 for windows_intelx86

Ok, I see where you're at. If you go to the Transfers tab, you should be seeing a line with some of the same information as you've pulled from the Work tab. From there, select the work unit and click on the Retry Now button. From there, go to the Messages tab and see what is reported. It should make another attempt to download, and if it can't, there should be entries that can tell us what's happening.

I went to look at your computers, to see if the record of your results might have a clue, but you've got them hidden. That's your choice, but there really isn't any critical information available to anybody else who looks at them. When you look, there's all kinds of good info, but if you look at my computers, that info is all that I'd see of yours. Enough to get jealous if you're running 20 high-end 4-CPU boxes, <g> but more to the point, we'd be able to drill down to the results you're downloading and returning, and see if there are problems apparent there.

Hi. I'm back, and I think you have a bad program problem here. The information I put in my last message was all that was available then, and is still the same as before. The program is maybe going to the wrong address, but the address I input in the attach to Project box is in quotes: "http://setiathome.berkeley.edu" but it won't correct it. The following was copied from the message in quotes: "Here is the line as I have set the way to input the lines information as above: Project / SETI@home, Application / setiathome 4.18, Name / NAME (where name is the alphanumeric name given the the work file), CPU time / ---, Progress / 0.00%, To completion / 17:53:32, Report Deadline / 10/27/2005 19:50:55:PM, Status / Downloading" Following is the message with the errant URL in quotes: "10/20/2005 01:25:58:AM||General prefs: from unknown project http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ (last modified 2005-10-01 02:18:06)"
Did you change the URL again? I looked in the transfer tab, and there is no anything listed, but the program still says DOWNLOADING in the Status column of the Work tab. THe messages are still the same except the Time Stamps.
I re-installed the older SETI@home, and it works fine still. I'm glad you haven't closed the older SETI interface ( the one before BOINC). Maybe you should start with the old interface, and remake the BOINC from there. Just making minor adjustments to the interface with no extra baggage, or options that would not be part of the users interface (which would be installed on the users computer. Options, and all) stored on the users computer not on yours. Allowing the user to make any changes without needing to connect to the BOINC unless a work package is sent (upload, or Download). You could maybe make the text from the interface a bit larger, but don't change the interface window other than that. It's simple nice graphics. Still works. BOINC is having too many problems with the new program. One other thing: I'm not getting anymessages referring to Deferred comunications. Thank You for Your Time, and Assistance.

Hi. I'm replying to my reply, as to add a little bit. I closed the program again, opened, it now it's working again. Before I detached / retatached to the project. This time after it not working I repeated the Reset Project function. This time it worked. Haven't changed a thing. After two plus days trying to get the software to work. Don't have a clue as why it wasn't working. Was the BOINC work site down again anytime during the last three days, and please about when if you know? Thank You for Your Time, and Assistance.

The servers will occasionally be down for minutes at a time, and were down on Wednesday from about 1700 to 2000 UTC for regular maintenance, but that's been it so far as I'm aware. I'm glad you're connected now!

Hi Guys,

I have a same problem. I am not getting new workunits.
I have Seti and Climateprediction.

At first I've got only SETI but it was down too many times, so I said lets get enough work for 4 days. Was not enough, so I started Climate also. It is also was not enough, so I changed my prefs that way to run 80% of the time Climate project.

cca 2 month ago I realized that I am not getting new work for 14 days, than I got work enough for cca 10 days, than 14 days without work.

In my term "a day" means cca 6 hours, thats my standard daily running time of my computer.

Now Seti works fine, and I changed my prefs to share resources between SETI and climate equally. Nothing happens. Now I am on my 12th day so If I am lucky I will get new works cca 2 days from now. I changed the Seti calculator program to an optimized one, nothing happened. Its strange.

Notes: Update button doesn't help, "no new work" - update - "new work" - update trick also doesn't work. I changes my prefs, nothing happened.

These were the start messages today:

I run Norton Internet Security and having problems connecting to setiboinc. I have config manually and reset cedurity levels. But the problem is that each time it connects it uses a different IP address and it get blocked. By the time you "Permit" it has times itself out. If this problem can't be corrected without turning Nortons off, I will have to op out of the program after be a member since 1999. I will not give up my security when Berkeley is not responsable as per their disclaimer. Hope that you can come up with a fix.

I use Mcafee. When I first install a boinc client and click "launch" from the install box. Mcafee pops up two boxes asking if "first" that boincmgr.exe and then if boinc.exe have permission for full internet access. Every once in a while it doesn't seem to see it. If I reboot and restart it sees it then. Also, I can manually go into "utilities" "applications" and make sure boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe are there. I've never had to do any manual interventions.

Are you using the latest Boinc version? 5.2.12 came out last nite. By clicking here the download will start immediately, just install right over the top of the old. no need to uninstall

I guess it hasn't been fixed yet. Why can't you make it (BOINC) so it will download what it needs to run without excuses? I want to be able to run BOINC if it has to be BOINC for the SETI project. I'm not a rocket scientist, or as some people call them [computer Geeks]. I'm just the normal everyday user that has decided to donate some computer time to a cause that I think might lead to contact with other people from other planets, and maybe that would be good for all. What now? Thank You in Advance for Your Assistance.

Please find here some more messages as references to the new problems:

I am ammendinding this message to add some new messages from BOINC's New?
I can't say I like it YET, or NOW. maybe it is not the program now maybe it's your site. No clue as yet. Here are that added messages:

According to the messages, and the actions of the program. I'm expecting it to take 1-5 hours just to dounload the needed software before the program can even think of starting. I don't like to complain, but here we go again. The messages should help you to locate the roadblock, and fix it. Thanks Again.
