I have migrated my classic SETI@Home account to the oddly named BOINC - and installed the BOINC application (under OS X 10.3.9) as per instructions - BUT every time the screensaver or BOINC manager start there is a connection failure message (Connection failed).

I have managed to determine that this is failing to connect to localhost YET the BOINC manager refuses to allow me to include a localhost proxy or any proxy for that matter.

Any suggestions - I do not want to have to spend much time on this.

Best Regards

I had the same problem with the "connection failed", then I treid the "stupid" answer. I rebooted. Viola! It worked. Hope this solves the problem for others.

If a reboot doesn't solve this, the only thing I can think of is that you may have tried to "Select Computer..." in the File menu. This is present for those with "farms" of multiple computers - you can remotely control other computers from a single one. However, doing so requires setting up some files on the remote ones AND on your local one... and getting "back" to where you can control the local one requires either knowing the random string of gibberish default password created for it, or changing the local password to something meaningful.

Full explanation of course is in the Wiki.

Anyway, if all else fails, and you get "Connection failed" to Localhost every time, even after a reboot, try "Select Computer" with host name "Localhost" (should be in drop-down). For password, copy the string from the file Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/gui_rpc_auth.cfg. If that file does not exist, then leave the password field blank. Please note that this should NOT be necessary - I've seen ONE Mac install that had to do this, one time, out of hundreds... my own... and only after I'd tried and failed (due to network problems) to remotely control several other computers. Once it works, you shouldn't have to do it again.

If THAT doesn't work, I'd reinstall BOINC, as something definitely isn't "right".
