Did you install the program as a "service" or a single user or any user?

I also have this problem. I'm running Win XP Media Center, which I think has nothing to do with my problem, but all I usually get is either a blank screen for the screen saver or that stupid looking Boinc logo telling me the progress. Most of the time it's just blank. I tried having it "Run always" just to see if it was not getting triggered properly with the screensave after 7 mins, but that doesn't help.

What do you mean by, "Did you install the program as a 'service' or a single user or any user?" I didn't notice the option to install it one way or the other. Which way is correct??

I also have this problem. I'm running Win XP Pro. I didn't have this problem on my other computer which also had XP pro. I have the same thing occur, it is either a blank screen for the screen saver or that stupid looking Boinc logo telling me the progress. Most of the time it's just blank. However sometimes the screen saver will start for about 2 seconds then blank screen. I tried having it "Run always" just to see if it was not getting triggered properly with the screensave after 7 mins, but that doesn't help. I've tried these same things.

Everyone who can't get it to run, please leave your Boinc version behind, plus your make of videocard.

Also in which way you installed BOINC. If you have v4.30 or above, you must have had the choice of installing as a single/multi user or as a service. Service installs don't show graphics by default. But there is a work around for that (appropriately no text, only pictures ;)).

Which projects are you running, if more than one?
Do you have the updated science applications for these projects? Since there was a bug in Boinc all the way up to 4.45 where it would interfere running graphics/screensaver with mostly ATI cards. (Hence why I ask what chipset your videocard has)

Looking back, I did install the program as a Single User. I am running version 4.45 and use an MSI Radeon Express 200 Series. I believe it is integrated into the motherboard, but still, video memory shouldn't be a problem since I have a Gig and the video shares like 128MB of that. You say there's something wrong with 4.45 and ATi cards though?

Read the version details on 4.45 .. It says under Known Problems:
Graphics sometimes do not work with ATI Graphics card. This bug has been fixed, but it requires new applications to be built. Please check with the various projects to find out when they'll release a new applicaton with the fix.

One thing I forgot earlier. If you are running one of the optimized science applications (4.02/4.11; made by Ned Ludd or TMR), these won't show graphics or screensavers either. It's because these applications are not linked to the graphics libraries.

I just installed this and I have windows xp home. when my screensaver comes on, everything looks fine for about 3 seconds then my screen goes blank. I never had any trouble out of this program years ago. I installed as a single user. any help would be great.

BOINC version: 4.45
Videocard: ATI Mobility Radeon x600
Projects: Seti@home

Tried the workaround - BOINC was not listed as a service!

I am also having this issue. I am running BOINC 4.45 an dhave an Intel 82845GL graphics card. Actually; it worked once totally out of the blue, for one day, then never again. No settings were changed before it worked that day, and none were changed after, very odd. Any ideas?

I am having same problem. winxp, ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 video card. have v5.2.2 plus added einstein fix for ati.

no change/fix on screensaver. resolution is 1280x1024

does not work on laptop screen or when attached to external monitor.

works on 'show graphic" and screensaver preview, but not when
screensaver kicks in automatically.

I've just installed BOINC manager v5.2.2 on a Toshiba Portege M300 notebook.

I chose the single user install (the recommended one).

The graphics controller is an on-mother-board Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controller.

I constantly get the "BOINC is currently suspended." message, but no graphics. I can use the "Show graphics" button to get the graphics to display in a little window.

Also my BOINC manager tells me there's no actual progress through the current work unit.

???

This has nothing to do with the origin problem of no graphics but:

Please check your General preferences in your account if "Do work while computer is in use?" is "yes".

Message 183254 - Posted: 28 Oct 2005, 13:50:09 UTC - in response to Message 181921.

I'm experiencing same screensaver problem on my laptop.
Installed BOINC version 5.2.2 as single user + project Seti@home.
Video adapter: ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5000 with 128 Mb RAM.

Screensaver works OK in preview and inside BOINC Manager, but displays only black screen when kicking in automatically.

Please anyone, a solution to this problem!

For reference: Installed same SW on desktop PC with video adapter: Intel 82865G and 64 Mb of RAM.
No problems encountered. Screensaver works nicely both manually and automatically.

Well my graphics are working great now. And all I did was remove my Norton and replace it with AVG. I guess Norton virus protection had problems with graphics in the screensaver. Course it could also be a coincidence. BUt it obviously wasn't my video card or anything like that since I didn't do anything to change it.

. . . but all I usually get is either a blank screen for the screen saver or that stupid looking Boinc logo telling me the progress. Most of the time it's just blank. I tried having it "Run always" just to see if it was not getting triggered properly with the screensave after 7 mins, but that doesn't help.

This is exactly the same thing I have.

NOTE:
SETI@Home screensaver works fine from BOINC, but the CPDN screensaver gives this problem. Other than my screensaver is set to 4 minutes, the symtoms are identical. Also, CPDN does not display progress next to the stupid BOINC logo.

NOTE 2:
This was not always the case. CPDN used to create a screensaver, but recently...

BOINC version 4.45
ATI Radeon X850 XT graphics card (up-to-date drivers)
BOINC is installed as a full-access client (it is not listed on the work-around)

I had the same problem where the screen saver wouldn't work. I found that if I allowed my firewall software (Zonealarm) to not shut off all internet activity when the screen saver activated, the graphics worked fine. When I tell it to stop all network activity, the screen saver graphics don't come up..

Apparently, there must be some local intranet or internet activity that BOINC/SETI is using...

it's posted under the seti message board, but the solution to the screensaver showing up is turning off your password protect. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=23385
so it finally works, but i do have it on password protect for a reason. . .

Message 200611 - Posted: 2 Dec 2005, 0:40:59 UTC - in response to Message 175436.

I had upgraded to the boinc 5.x version hoping that would solve the issue as well as take care of a few other issues that suddenly started up totally out of the blue, unfortunately; it didnt and all problems continued as they did with the previous version. I looked and looked thru these postings to see if there was an answer but I was unable to find anything--just a lot of other posts from people experiencing the same exact problem. In any case; I came to a conclusion to fix the issues permanently and it worked like a charm! I uninstalled boinc and am not going to reinstall it. No more problems!!! I have no further intention of participating in a project such as this--dont get me wrong--its a great idea and hopefully it will bear fruit, but there needs to be a total scrapping of the existing boinc client and it needs to be re-written from scratch so that is actually works. Also, there needs to be some sort of actual "Technical Support" for the software, this posting issues here only to never hear a fix just dosent work. Good Luck everyone!!

Bye
