Message 170459 - Posted: 21 Sep 2005, 21:39:22 UTC - in response to Message 170424.

OK I did notice that I had typed in the middle if the message after I had hit return :(
Anyway I have clicked the "no New Work" thingy for this laptop until i can do more testing. I guess it will finish the work it has and turn it in until it's done right? Once i feel better with it i can restart the work. How do i tell it not to download more then 2 WU? Right now it downloads 4 and sometimes 5.
Another reason for doing this is that this laptop will be offline for about a week or two while i'm gone away for some R & R :)

Thanks for your time and help!!
Ricky

The most straightforward way to limit the size of your WU cache is to change the "connect to server every X days" setting in your profile. Whatever it is now, cut it in half and you should keep 2 or 3 work units on your machine at a time. Forget how often you actually want to connect... this setting relies on (for now) inaccurate benchmarks.

When you dial up to connect, it will refill its cache up to the amount you specificied. Unfortunately, there is no way to explicitly say "I want exactly 2 work units."

This may be a dumb question but do some of the projects but more of a load on the CPU then others? They all do basicly the same thing right?

This is not a dumb question at all. The answer is that each of the projects is doing different things with each work unit. After a while you'll see how long each project takes on your computer. The Climate Prediction work units crunch and crunch and crunch and crunch for weeks.

The project server figures out how much work to give you based on your "connect every" setting, your computer's benchmarks, and how much resource share you gave that project on that computer.

Say that your machine could crunch an Einstein unit in 10 hours, but you are sharing the machine 50/50 between Einstein and SETI. This means your computer will spend half its time crunching Einstein, and you can reasonably expect to be done a work unit in 20 hours. You are set to connect every 2 days, so when your machine connects to the server, it will "top off your tank" so you have about 48 hours of work (about 2 Einstein work units).

The problem is that often the benchmarks are inaccurate, and the amount of work needed to complete a given work unit can be difficult to predict with any certainty. Combine these and you get the wide range of cache issues that you hear about on this Forum. This is why I can't give you an exact figure for cache settings other than "half of whatever gave you 4 units."

(BTW, the next version of the BOINC client supposedly improves the benchmarking accuracy a lot. I'm looking forward to that... and the mad dash of everyone changing their cache settings.)

I hope that helps.

The fact that not all programs use the same "stuff" is what allows an Intel processor with "Hyper-Threading" to make one CPU look like two. You do NOT get a full two CPUs, but, you do get 40-60% of one. So, My HT computers do two work units in slightly longer run times than a non-HT computer, but I am doing two at the same time (or 4 in a dual CPU Xeon with HT). You can see the effect if you look at the processing times in my chart.

Compare the 2.8 GHz non-HT with the 3.0 GHz HT processors and you can see that the 3.0 GHz processors are SLOWER than the 2.8 GHz processor. BUT, I am doing 2 at the same time, hence higher throughput.

In general, running work from different projects on the systems would increase slightly the efficiency as they are more LIKELY to be using different parts of the CPU for processing. Fewer conflicts, faster speed.

If you mouse around the Wiki you should be able to find more information. Look for physical processor, logical processor, hyperthreading (or is it hyper-threading?) and the like. see if they help.

And the only dumb question is the one you DON'T ask ...

Well, I almost think that the errors have something to do with my screensaver, i went and turned it on this moring and almost as soon as it trid to come on i got an error! So when i go home after work today i'll turn the screen saver back off and see what happens.

Ricky,

Go into hardware manager it will usually identify the chip set for the video card. If it says Radeon ... that is an ATI and there have been problems with ATI and BOINC. Since I don't look at the graphics that much it has not been an issue for me ... but that may be part of your problem.

It also may be something else entirely too ...

And BTW what's the problem with ATI and BOINC's graphics? I heard a lot about it, but why ATI makes things differ, incompatibility or what?

OK, I turned off the "ScreenSaver" and sure as God made little Green Apples (hhhmmmmm reminds me of a song) I got an error! So i'm going to leave the ScreenSaver off and see what happens. However, I have notice by doing that I have to go in and click on the next file to see it, It don't switch for one to the other on it's own like in the ScreenSaver.

OK, I think this we can put this one to "bed". I have found that when i stop using the ScreenSaver I stop getting the "Client Errors". It don't tell me why i was getting them when using the ScreenSaver i just know it stopped when i stopped using it. Thanks to all who gave me tips on fixing it!
