I Say we all stop crunching for Berkley until they learn to treat the seti community with a little respect. We are providing a valuable resource, free of charge i might add, and Berkley doesnt seem to care or acknowledge this fact. i am going to recommend to my team members that we disconnect from Seti.
I am also going to remove Seti from all the computers here at New York University. all 4319 of them.

Any partiular reason why?

I couldn't really care how they treat the community. At the end of the day it comes to this:

We have CPU time
Berkley has the radio data

Each of us wants what the other has got, so we do an exchange.

Of course, if SETI@home isn't good enough, you could construct your own r/t (which I am trying to persuade my parents to let me do)

Wow!! All one (1) of you?

>I am also going to remove Seti from all the computers here at New York University. all 4319 of them.

That should give the rest us a few more WU's to process!
THANKS!

Okay, now let's see, who's in charge of setting up the picket schedule? We got anybody handling press coverage and propaganda? And who's actually going to present our demands to management and speak for us while an agreement is hammered out? See that's all stuff that goes on in an organized legitamate STRIKE. Not just somebody having a hissy fit and taking his toys home with him from a bad playdate.

Grow up! It's a VOLUNTEER program, your not happy look elsewhere for something more to your liking. The idea that pressure can be applied to people already smashed flat under the weight of trying to get this thing up and running is ridiculous.

Am I happy with the situation, HELL NO! BUT, I understand the position I am in and know the limits I'm willing to go to for the good of the project. When that limit is reached, I will quietly pack my toys and be gone, because that is when it is right for me, not because someone yelled STRIKE!

Problem: Too many users, not enough Work Units.
Solution: Let all the whiners & crybabies "put their money where their mouth is" and QUIT! That will free up any/all available Work Units for the rest of us dedicated users.

Well I for one will stop using BOINC till they get their problems solved.. I will run the old SETI program till they are solved..

No work units.. Never had that problem with the old SETI !

I will check the updates daily and see if they get it solved.. While the BOINC was working and getting work units it was great ! Then it kind of petered out :( And my computer was just sitting there not solving any of the mysteries of the universe...

So you're going to recommend to your PCs that they disconnect from Seti? ;-)

Jesus Bloody Christ will you people grow up!

Are you in this project for the good of the project or are you simply in it for the glory and braging rights of finding ET signal?

The reason you're supposed to be doing this is as a selfless act helping the SETI people do their work which is hopefully for the good of mankind.

If your don't think that they are working fast enough, well why don't you go and get a degree/masters/doctorate and go there and help them out.

Disneyland didn't work when they opened that, this is a new project and they need time to iron out the bugs. The reason there weren't problems with SETI@home classic is because most of us weren't there in the begining. I don't know what it was like, they probably did have some problems, but SETI BOINC has a ready made client base of a few million people. This means extreme traffic demand which they can't yet supply, but they're trying their best, if you knew anything about computers you wouldn't be complianing that they're not working fast enough.

In short, the project is new, it's always going to have bugs in the begining, so stop your moaning or go elsewhere, we don't want to hear it, we can use your work units, we would be living a better life without you.

Absolutely, wonderfully said ... I'm frustrated along with the rest of them, I have a 3.2ghz Prescott waiting for work (a new toy) but I just switched her off and keep watching my other machines until there's work.

I do however think that Berkeley should keep us more informed about what's going on - their communication is terrible ... but then I would say this - while they're talking to us, who's fixing the problems?

Patience is what is required! I spat my own dummy last night in frustration - but I didn't quit the project!!!!

Yes, I might be.....(but at least I don't think with it) :)

Yes, you are right again!....(but I didn't refer to myself as "we") :)

Thats right! (you have two) (plus the 4319 at NYU "guess their hidden") :)

If you want to see what I run, you can look at them. (they're not hidden) :)

Nope your're wrong there. (but then again I'm not homophobic either) :)

Holy crap... some people take this way too seriously. You're letting a scientific experiment use your free cycles because you care about the research. If they have work for your PC, be happy. If not, don't worry... it'll come.

Stop watching your PC churn numbers... Turn your monitor off... go outside and get some radiation not cause by your monitor for a change. Better yet, get a life.

You should just feel good about the fact that you have made your computers' resources availible. What else can you do? Cry? Apparently so.

WRONG again - SETI has been around since the 90's, Im old enough to remember them... as for bugs - they are obviously using the Australian version of computing ----get the shit out as quick as possible and screw the users ---- what are the users going to do?? they're only computer illiterates...buyt that doesn't work at SETI

>The reason there weren't problems with
> SETI@home classic is because most of us weren't there in the begining.

WRONG again - - get your facts straight..... there were nearly five million seti "classic" users....there are nearly 40,000 BONK users big diff.

> if
> you knew anything about computers you wouldn't be complianing that they're not
> working fast enough.

and your the computer student - you know all about computers and getting them to work.

If you read the few messages on the front page most of the problems are software (ie your type of skills haven't been used properly) or scheduling problems.

>
> In short, the project is new,

it's not it has been beta tested and released into the real world ergo it is supposed to work. if the computer hard heads at Berkeley had done their job properly there would be no problems. The myth that all new systems must cock-up is just that - a myht propogated by computer programmers to cover their own arses. I know I used to love telling the illiterati that computers are complicated things and should work first time.
Why do you think microsoft has been able to get away with selling such shonky products for so long??

Nope you are wrong again MDU, the crunch program is the same but the support software is new.

BOY ARE YOU WRONG MDU, you should read the tech logs for the past 5 years, and I was there and I can remember lots and lots of problems....... LOLOLOL there are a total of 5 plus Million users that have processed "1" wu or more for the entire 5 years, at present there are around 500,000 that are some what active.

Active users Classic Seti@H

Most if not all new systems screwup all the time

Use the dictionary for those hard words like illiterate, or is that latin

Spoken like a truely well informed individual MDU so 'not' true, so for a score I give you a minus 99 for factual info and a wopping + 99 for fictional info.... Have a nice day!!

Yep, please don't take one "bad apple" Australian as an example of us all, after that rant of a "down under" person I'm ashamed I'm in the same hemisphere as him.
