Hello, my name is Andrew (Seti@home monkier aside), and I'd like to apologize for many of the buffons that portray the recent lack of work units and bugs as the greatest tragedy in the history of Western civilization. Simply, this note is to let you that these loud-mouth clowns do not, in any way, represent the entirety of the Seti@home community, and I for one sincerely hope you do not take their criticism as such. Unfortunately, it is a characteristic of human nature for one to complain incessantly at the negative aspects of life, but not to spend the same energy when credit or praise is due. Think about people at a restaurant. They will very quickly tell the manager about a rude waiter/waitress, but how many people approach the manager with a message of "my server was very quick and pleasant, thank you"? Very few. The same principle applies here. The few people dwelling on the negative aspects seem to be doing most of the talking. However, and again unfortunately, the people content or happy with the situation (such as myself) haven't gone out of their way to say that they like the program. I think the new client is neat, I'm enthusiastic about (most of) the community and the science, and I accept and understand that there will be "growing pains". But I digress. This problem is compounded by the fact that the people unhappy with Seti/Boinc are complaining so often and so loudly (so to speak) on these boards that it looks like that the entire Seti@home community is frothing at the mouth, screaming for the blood of the developers if work units aren't handed out, like an unruly mob at soup kitchen. We're not all like that, and I hope you developers know that. It's just a few loud-mouth clowns that make us all look bad. So, that's my post. "Let the flaming begin", as they say. edit: I misspelled "restaurant." ;) |

In this world there are two types of people: The doers and the complainers. I have quit going over to the S@H classic boards. That has digressed into one big whine session. |

Don't you me degenerated? :) I also liked the person that indicated that (in another thread) that the search for intelligent life on Earth should be pursued. Of course, are we sure that the BOINC project isn't, in fact, a search for intelligent life both here on Earth and out there? I will admit that I too have been critical at times of the places where I feel insufficient attention has been made, and of the sins of omission and comission. But for all of its flaws, BOINC is a significant advance in distributed processing and recognition of that fact should be made. Most of the complaints, including many of mine, are made with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. But I do second the motion that, for all warts, SETI@Home Powered by BOINC is a significant advance and that the developers should be recognized for the contributions made by them. Andrew was right, we don't say it enough ... Well done people! |

Hello, I work as a software developer for the astronomy department at UC Berkeley. This morning, a contributor to the BOINC SETI@Home project sent e-mail to an exploder list in the astronomy department trying to convey his worry over how badly the BOINC project is being handled, stating: "I am writing this as a last resort to try and get someone at Berkeley to have a look at the situation and to commit the resources needed to save the largest distributed computing network the world has ever seen. We don't even get the courtesy of being told what's going on. The latest news was posted on 19 July, I'm writing this at 18;20 on 21 July." Please don't do this again. The list used went out to several hundred people in the department and it doesn't help. Colby Gutierrez-Kraybill Radio Astronomy Laboratory UC Berkeley |

Wow. Aside from that being stupid and unproductive, that person does not have any grasp of what is going on and doesn't pay attention in the least. I think UCB has been very forthcoming in letting us know what is going on. The front page albeit far better than Classic, is slightly lacking, but the updates from Rom (and occasionally other Dev Team people) are excellent; highly informative and very open. Urg. I've never seen people get so uptight about such trivial matters. Just relax and let the people at Berkeley do their jobs. It's my first post here. :) Anyway, just wanted to add my thanks to all the folks working on BOINC and the individual projects it is supporting. I installed the BOINC version of SETI@Home last Friday to try it out. As of last night, I now have it installed on both my computers at home and the one here at work. They've all been able to work on a number of units even with the difficulties and my main home system actually has some credits to it now. :). My PII-300 might be done with its first unit late tonight LOL. I just finished reading through Paul's BOINC Manual linked in Pascal's post and it was really well done and informative. Great work there. I noticed my computer ID for my main home system was like 80,000 something and the one I added last night was 100,000 something. So, if this is an auto-incrementing database entry, it would appear that 20,000 new hosts joined within 5 days. Mark H. |

The clod who sent out that blanket email is a perfect example of what I said in the first post of this thread. Lots of Seti@home users are happy with things, yet some assinine goon feels he's important enough to email everyone at the U of C astronomy department to complain about Boinc, thus making us all look bad. Like someone said in another thread, how are these fanatics going to react when Seti@home on Boinc is 100% bug free and STILL not giving everyone all the work units they want? The Seti@home people have openly said this will be the case. |

I just want to say I think the S@H team is doing a geat job. To put together and manange a project like this is no easy task. If the whiners and complainers think it is easy let them try to do it. REDHATS off to the Berkeley team.....great job!!!! <a> [/url] |

I too join in the praise for the development team at Berkeley. If it wasn't for the SETI project, I would not have nearly as many awesome computers. It has allowed me to learn a great deal about putting my network together, and given me an incentive to build ever faster machines. I benefit from this by being able to hold network gaming sessions here in the "lab", and Berkeley has benefitted by having all the idle time from my 16 machines crunching WU's. Sure, there are going to be some speed bumps along the way in any new project of this magnitude, but the good far outweighs the bad. Thanks to all the members of the SETI/BOINC development team for getting me deeply into a hobby that has become my career (building and repairing PC's/ISP network technician. Regards, Daniel. |

Thank you. :) There is more if you are up for it: As part of an "unofficial" effort to document the SETI@Home Powered by BOINC, the following documents have been written to aid you in the use of SETI@Home Powered by BOINC: Documentation Menu (pdb) Release Notes = Thanks!
