I don't know how feasible this is for SETI@Home right now or even ever, but I would like to see a realtime server status page, so people could see how the transitioners, splitters, schedulers, and validators are working. Perhaps even in the form of say: 2 of 3 splitters functioning normally, or: 5 of 5 transitioners functioning normally. I've seen automatic server status pages before, especially in reference to network routers and backbone status. It could even possibly be tied into the main message board to provide some news items automatically when something big happens and even when it's fixed. The Dev team could then edit the message whenever and however they saw fit to better communicate the cause of the outage.

Chris

I agree. When the developers have time, this would be a nice feature to add.

This would very easily let people know if there are servers down, and cut down the the general ANGST that happens after a few hours of them being down and no message on the front page.

Personally I am always happy to wait a few hours for things to work out... but it seems on these boards there are SO MANY that scream and whine as soon as the servers are down for 20minutes (ok its an exageration). If they had information about what and when is out they may whine less.

No. They will still whine. Only now it will be because they will get the message that the project is haveing problem "x" and it is interfering with their hair loss.

Whiners whine. That is one of the constants in the universe. As soon as you take away one topic, they will invent a new one, real or imagined.

Even if there is merit in the complaint, their credibility is destroyed with the intemperate language. Big Al Capone did say "You can get more with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone."; but, here you are not going to make progress with abusive language.
