Have Been A Seti user for 4.981 years, and have completed 6080 workunits. Have just learned about the change to BOINC (gotta love /.) tried to transfer existing account, but attached email is no longer valid, so did not receive the account ID that is sent.

Have since changed the email attached to my old Seti@Home account. Will there be any further uploads of the existing user database? If not, and I am unable to migrate my old account over, I believe I will be ending my Seti activities.

The thought of starting over at 0 units again is not a pleasing one (I see now that we all start at 0 with the new version, but still want the link to my old stats, braggin rights etc..) If I had known of the upcoming changes would have updated the email address on my profile long ago.

I also have a similar issue. The mail server at my university which contained the email account I originally used to sign up is not even active anymore, so I can't receive any mail at that address. I already spoke to admins at NYU and they were not able or willing to setup something so that an email sent to that address can be sent to me.

I tried all this about a year ago and then just accepted that I would not be able to login to the account anymore. But I kept crunching away under the same account. I figured that even though I could not log in, at least I can keep my stats and keep participating.

I have been using Set@home for 5.1 years now and with this new client it seems I will have to abandon all my work for all these years because I can not convert my account without being able to recieve the email.

I can provide all sorts of proof that I had this account including usenet posts with this account under my name, the original email I recieved from NYU when I first got an account and many more items if need be.

Is there a way to rescue my account so that I can continue participating in Seti@home and retain the stats from all these years?

thank you,

Larry Velez

Nope, you're screwed... Seems they did one DB transfer, and that's it!

The "Chimps with keyboards" didn't even announce this whole thing going live to the Beta Testers, nor did they let anybody know the user data would be 5 weeks old, and things like email addr were important in their model!!

I think the Chimps have secured positions at Microsoft, as they show a stellar talent for ignoring what users want!

I recently moved and overlooked changing what had been an innocuous sh1 email address. now I find that 25k worth of history gone. what boggles this mind is what comparative rubbish made the front page of sh1: the earth shattering revelation of a new mac client made it, but NOT the snapshot to come and the importance of the email address. how damed user friendly it could have been and therein lies what is at the heart of this cold dish--we are hambuger for the processing needs. does it matter if a few hundred or thousand lose their history? no.

Why didn't users get information about the data transfer of the user database?
I have recently changed ISP and got a new e-mail and can't access the old e-mail. I have changed the e-mail used i classical S@H, but obviously that doesn't resolve the problem to activate the BOINC account I'm very disappointed at the seti project for not taking better care of us. Why isn't it possible to use the old S@H password?
Thank you very much for making me lose the old statistics, if there will be nothing done about this problem I see no other way than to abandone S@H and participate in some other distributed computer project where better support of user is perhaps offered.

The reason for the first snapshot was necessary to test functionality of the public release site.

And why is it anyone other than your own fault that you haven't kept your email current?

Just a guess here, but I'm sure another snapshot will be taken when S@H classic is actually closed.

But the stated policy is that once the snapshot was taken no changes in S@H1 will be moved over.

Yes, I'm aware of what the stated policy says.

However, doesn't it make sense to make a final transfer as the project is closed? I know that's what I would do...

I could really care less if the policy is followed or not, as I stopped running classic when I started running beta. So my totals are current. I was never really into the credit aspect to begin with...

Why not offer solutions, instead of throwing around blame? Losing access to an email account is very common and can occur for many reasons. Not everyone has the foresight to plan ahead 5 years.

I think it is obvious that the lack of an alternate means of retrieving a password or loging into an account on S@H1, besides access to the original email address, was a major oversight in the original project.

While the credit aspect is not important for some, it is for others - I think the admins should offer some help for the few people who have dedicated years to the project and feel an attatchment to the credits they have accumulated. Maybe they can prevent an onslaught of requests by only helping people who offer a monetary donation to the project - this will eliminate all but the very dedicated users and can be easily justified because of the extra effort the admins would have to take on.

Ive been at S@H1 5.26 years, since the beta of S@H1 and have 8800 results. My original email address is long long gone, maybe 5 ISP's or more ago, and the signin I had went with a HDD crash more than 2 years ago. So I too have just been able to watch the stats and not change anything on my account

It would be nice for dedicated users such as myself who dont have the original email to be able to get these stats back for the new one. I for one would be happy to give a small donation to cover the admin time to make this fix + a little something towards the project itself.

Am I crazy or does it seem like asking to much to pay the admins to spend 5 minutes on my account to fix this when I have quite happily given over 5 years and 14 CPU years of freely to this project ?????

Already have an original 'Classic' account as of May 14, 2004?
We've transferred it, just activate it. (WRONG. IT HAS NOT BEEN TRANSFERRED)

I have been a user since march 2004 but my account DOES NOT appear on boinc. Why? It seams that the old seti@home accounts WERE NOT all transferred as mine was MISSING.
I have since had to start a new account (with the same ID and email as the old account) but I have grave doubts that the seti admin team will ever do anything to fix my problem.

Can someone point me to this policy? It seems at odds with what people are saying here, and with Paul Buck's FAQ ( http://boinc-doc.net/site-misc/index-projects.php )

This discussion is rather old. The stated policy has since changed. There WILL be a second snapshot after classic is shut down. They will migrate any of the account info for which the transfer account was activated. They will TRY to migrate anything where the email addresses are the same. They will almost certainly not migrate anything that does not match the above two cases. This is from a discussion with Rom Walton in I believe mid to late July 2004.
