Yes, this is going to be a learning curve, but I've been wanting to learn Linux anyway. I have an older machine that has Linux running on it, but it's so old and slow that I wasn't really getting any use out of it. Jim, I am running SuSE Linux 9.2 Apache 2.0.53 mySQL 4.0 php 5.0.3 SSL Rexx 2.1 Hardly and expert, but have been doing this for awhile, and have experienced most of the pitfalls. More than happy to answer any questions. You can contact me at support_at_microtechniques_dot_com. Since you are new I would suggest giving the distro the new drive and accepting its partitioning. I never install a GUI on server machines because the work is usually done with scripts and it is one less thing using-resources/to-break/to-get-hacked, but they do reduce the learning curve, so probably a good idea for you. GUIs are like editors and religion -- they generate a lot of fervent opinion. Both KDE and GNOME are well supported. Knoppix uses KDE. Getting the correct video settings is always a challenge, but if your system works with Knoppix, the distro should be able to figure it out. Hands-on network configuration is not for the faint-of-heart either, but the disto setup should get you up and running, and you can tweak later if necessary. I also install: >>Reiserfs file system for everything except the boot partition. Fast and recoverable. >>SSH for remote access (from another linux machine or Windows, local or internet). A bit of a bother to set up, but the default 'R'(remote) commands have a lot of attack vectors. >>phpMyAdmin for mySQL support via a browser (great application). >>Samba to create shares accessible from Windows (I would never put this on a network facing sever because of the attack potential, but in this case it might be usefull in the initial stages (my internal network, however, uses a Samba server as my Windows file server, print server, and PDC)). >>'The' for a full screen editor that does not need a GUI and works remotely. vi is the standard editor, but I could never get comfortable with it. >>Cups for printer support to a remote network printer. Getting things to print is also something that is harder than it should be. >>awstats to collect and report web site usage (another great application). >>snort to monitor for attacks. >>tripwire to monitor system for changes/attacks. >>Rexx(regina ooRexx) for scripting (works cross platforms -- linux, Windows, Mac, Palm, Zseries, ...) (use it extensively). >>php for some web applications. >>Wiki for bulletin board support. >>ethereal for network sniffing. >>k3b to burn CD/DVDs. ...don ...don |

I've got some news for all of you following this saga. I got an email from Rytis this morning. He is going to contact a company and attempt to get his project on "a real server". Kinda bums me, but I know it is best for the project. I just didn't have the resources nessicary for the project to run smoothly once it grew and the project was suffering from it. I do hope that it all works out for the best of the project. Thanks to all of you for the advice and the encouragement. Jim |

I got an email from Rytis this morning. He is going to contact a company and attempt to get his project on "a real server". Jim. Understand you being bummed out. Unavoidable emotion. You should understand that we know you relieved Rytis’ Laptop from playing server for the project. We can only go forward from there. We know you were the first step. We know you suffered financially and emotionally. We thank you. It’s good to see Rytis make the right decision. Fingers crossed for his attempt. |

Don't get me wrong... I am glad that I could help the project along and I do want to see it grow. I know that it can't grow on my machine. As far as suffereing financially, maybe... but I chose to spend the money, so I don't blame anyone for that except myself. I wanted to get more memory and a UPS for that machine anyway. M@H gave me that excuse. As far as sufferning emotionally... Well... it may have caused me some stress, but at least it gave me something to do rather than my usual nothing. :) |

Thanks Jim, you were a real help and no need to suffer because of thinking otherwise :) I have been watching this thread, and I'd like to say thanks to all who tried to help Jim trying to recover the server while I was away. Also, before considering plans to move to the "real" server, or whatever we call it, I was thinking of distributed server structure, something like distributed.net proxys. If this ever comes true, your computer will have a chance to return :) And we can hope to see m@h in the new server quite soon - I am buying it today, if the company will not take the money for the left 3 days of this month as for a whole month, and otherwise, on the first of September. Yup, I got mine all Uploaded late last night but haven't been able to Report them yet. We probably won't be able to Report them Until they get the New Server set up and the Database recovered or whatever they have to do to it ... :) |
