I have, two days ago, updated to BOINC 4.45. I run both SETI and CPDN and my preferences say to switch every 60 minutes, which used to work just fine. However since 4.45 my desktop has worked only SETI till it used up all WUs and then switched to CPDN. It has not requested any new SETI WUs. My laptop seems to have just stopped doing SETI though it still has WUs. If I pause CPDN it will happily run SETI.

Is this all due to 4.45 and should I revert to the previous version?

I find that 4.45 runs those work units that are due for return the soonest and does not like to do work in any other order. Makes sense I suppose so that units are not wasted by missing their deadlines.

Often if will run one project for a longer time, than the other with skippig the 60 Mim. change. When Boinc thinks that each project has had it's proper share of time it will strighten out.

Jim,

Version 4.45 takes a week or so to "settle in" and be in a balanced condition. There have been many complaints about it not seeming to heed wishes. But, if LEFT ALONE, it will get there. What kills it is if you keep going in to "fix" it, it is never going to get balanced.

There are also going to be times when you may not have work for one project queued and this is also normal. There are a couple bugs with fixes in the wings so when the next stable release is out we should see those improvements.

A similar question: I have BOINC at work running Seti and a work-related
project which has priority at 5:1 over Seti. Trouble is that even when the work project has no work, Seti still only gets a dribble of WU's, because there
is another project with much more resource share. All understandable so far,
but a lot of the time there are CPU's idle. Surely Boinc should get enough
WU's to keep idle CPU's busy?

Could I ask your connection method? Dial up, Broadband, always on?

also what is your "connect to" setting set at?

thanks

Always on, connect every 60 mins I think. (I'm not
there to check at moment)

It works fine when all projects have about the same
resource share, and I know that as the resource share
goes down, the number of queued WU's decreases, since
less WU's will be finished by deadline. However, when
fewer WU's are fetched than available CPU's, something
is wrong IMHO.

Yes, I agree. 4.45 has a few bugs that may be related to this problem, all of which are fixed in 4.72. 1) If a CPU is idle, the work that is waiting to report is counted as running (4.71). 2) One value in all structures that are in a vector of structures was not correctly zeroed (appears to be fixed in 4.72). On a multiple CPU system an idle CPU was not correctly identified as idle (4.71).

... all of which are fixed in 4.72.

Is 4.72 considered 'stable' or is there still work in progress?

I consider it stable work in progress. I've been running it on my machines for several weeks now without any problems. Developers will decide when it's ready for prime-time.

4.72 appears to be reasonably stable, but it has not been released. Development releases always carry a higher risk of problems.
